I think there's a difference between 'well-produced' and 'visual bling', of which Shogun is definitely the former.

That may be right. I could give the example of Game of Throne's gradual descent from story-led to aesthetics-led production. I don't know that the level of visual detail changed so much per se, but it felt decidedly more blingy by Season 5. It's a flag, but not necessarily a red one.

Covers the invention of blue gallium nitride LED, which is hugely important, responsible for the revolution in lighting and spurring development of GaN transistors. This video has the most accessible explanation of the physics I've seen, and it's a great story of the inventor Shuji Nakamura.

I've been watching all the Dirty Harry movies. Last night I got to the last one, The Dead Pool, from 1988. Nearly lost my mind when this scene came on...

Anyway, these are my thoughts on the series.
Dirty Harry (71)
Harry says his "Do ya feel lucky, punk?" line twice in this movie and they show amazing restraint in not bringing it back as his catchphrase in every subsequent movie. In fact the only time we hear it again is in the opening of Magnum Force. This movie has some cool scenes and a pretty great villain. The scene where Harry has to run between payphones at the command of the villain I imagine was an inspiration for that scene in Die Hard 3. It's kinda a slow movie tho. Watching through this entire series you really see how blockbuster movie pacing and editing got snappier across these 2 decades. Harry gets partnered with a latino cop and isn't happy about getting a new partner, but then the guy gets shot and says he wants to be a teacher instead. THE END
Magnum Force (73)
This is a good one. Harry investigates a secret society of renegade cops who dish out vigilante justice. Harry gets a new partner who then gets blown up by a bomb. The final action scenes are maybe the best action in the series.
The Enforcer (76)
In this one Harry has to partner with A LADY COP!? Harry don't like that because he's an old fashioned hard ass resistant to new ideas, but eventually he comes around because he's really a big softie. Then she gets shot.
Sudden Impact (81)
In this one a rape survivor goes on a killing spree taking down her attackers one by one. Whenever she sees one of her attackers the camera zooms in on her eyes and eerie music starts playing while we see flashbacks to the fateful night, and I BET Quentin Tarantino saw this one as well and took inspiration for Kill Bill. Definitely the darkest movie in the series. Can't remember if Harry has a partner in this one but if he does they definitely didn't make it till the end credits.
The Dead Pool (88)
This one has a lot of crazy shit going on. It has a car chase where Harry is being chased by an RC car with a bomb, followed by the villain who is at once steering the RC car AND driving his own car. Harry is partnered with a Chinese guy who does some kung fu before getting blown up. Slash is in it and fires a harpoon gun. Fun movie.
I guess my overall ranking would be: Magnum Force > The Dead Pool > Dirty Harry > The Enforcer > Sudden Impact

Could you believe I was waiting for LED to be used with main power voltage as a light source for many decades. And it finally happened, from the first shy usage as an small indicator to a more all over the place presence as years passed by.

I've been getting back into anime after... many years of not watching it & I just find this series chill, cute & goofy. The manga is also really good as the mangaka tends to drop in details of places to visit (if you are in Japan) or interesting bits of equipment. Yes I do want that awesome folding stove.

I've been watching a lot of European crime dramas. I'd known about Scandi-noir shows for years but I've discovered that French, Italian, German and Belgium ones are just as good!
