Evidently yes, The Quiet Earth (1985 film) was very loosely based on a 1981 novel of the same name. The setting and main character and first act are pretty similar, but from there the plot is completely different.

I saw Civil War on MAX. It takes the not so secret wet dream of a fair portion of US gun nuts and makes it reality. Oh sure, the film is seen through the travels of journalists who seem unbiased but by the end the bias in favor of democracy over a strong man president on his "third term" is obvious. It's obvious who he represents too. It's not just the cult like devotion of his followers but in his devotion to himself and holding on to power. Nobody has to say it out loud. But if they did the line, "what kind of American are you?", would cement who they are in your mind.
It purposely highlights the horror of such a war seemingly to reach those who behave in cult fashion today. They can't be reached. Nothing has or will reach them. They are practiced at hiding themselves from themselves with obfuscation and outright lie. It's a naïve hope to think anything can break through that. We have seen on this forum the fanaticism they entrench themselves in. So could it happen? We have seen them falsely claim victory and cheating and resort to violence before. You have read their self righteous responses on twitter and facebook. They are a fungus spread outward from 4chan to your family and friends. So could it happen? They have a plan for it already named 2025.
I like to think the better angels of our natures would prevail but after what I've seen over the past eight years I have my doubts.

I watched the original Beetlejuice for the first time since watching it over and over again in the 80's. It's still pretty fun to watch and I'm NOT looking forward to watching the sequel, but I will anyway.

I watched "Diamonds Are Forever", a 1971 James Bond movie with Sean Connery. Honestly I did not remember that it all looked like most of the budget went to Sean's pocket. The plot is a set of pieces incompetently glued together without any logic. There's no pace in this movie, no memorable character, except James of course. Above all, sci-fi sceneries looked like a low budget side job of two random one-hand carpenters; but that's probably just a standard of those times.

I watched two science fiction shows, first Fallout and then Devs. Of course Fallout is the more popular one with a really high budget and a higher IMDb score, but I enjoyed Devs much more to be honest. Fallout, while entertaining to watch, is really just too silly and goofy for my taste. Devs really talks about philosophical and theological issues, where in Fallout, stuff just sort of happens, unless you consider some generic "war never changes" musings to be deep and meaningful. And as for an antagonist, a megalomaniac would-be messiah like Forest or a ruthless psychopath like Kenton will always be way scarier to me than any silly trigger-happy ghoul.
As far as post-apocalyptic shows go, I liked Apple TV+'s Silo more than Fallout, it's more grounded and realistic. Silo S2 is coming soon as well as Severance S2 and Shrinking S2 with Harrison Ford, time to renew my Apple TV+ subscription when they arrive.

Also on Apple - Ted Lasso, which I've just started, and Disclaimer and Dark Matter.
And Slow Horses.
Apple TV is the best channel imho. A lot of solid shows.
I got bored of Fallout pretty quickly and stopped watching.

Ted Lasso is aces, but in the third season, the quality drops noticeably. If you like that type of humor, you might like Shrinking too. Slow Horses is something that's on my watchlist, heard many good things about it.

hahaha yeah DAF is usually considered one of if not the worst of Connery's Bonds, it's quite terrible.
I watched
Nobody Wants This last weekend and I
adored it. Depictions of healthy relationships are so freaking rare in TV/movies, it's wholesome and cute and a breath of fresh air. I have my thoughts about
the ending but I'm very much looking forward to S2, the writing and cast were excellent.

We Go On. It's an interesting take on ghost stories. It manages to surprise as well and that is hard to do these days when every possible permutation has been done. The protagonist offers thirty thousand dollars for proof of ghosts and finds that maybe you don't want to know. Maybe you just think you do.

Woman of the Hour. It’s a Netflix original movie but it’s pretty good. It’s based on real events, it’s about a woman on a dating show where one of the bachelors is a serial killer, but it tries to say something more about Hollywood misogyny, incompetent law enforcement and the risks of meeting strange men as a woman. I liked it. Anna Kendrick stars and also directs, and the serial killer is very superficially charming so they make it believable that his victims would engage with his requests at first.
The Penguin, it’s in the latest Batman movie universe but it’s not about superheroes but more like a Sopranos style gangster show. It’s quite captivating, Colin Farrell is unrecognizable but good and Cristin Milioti can get ready for awards season with her stellar performance as Sofia Falcone, her character also gives the show a feminist element.
