My brother bought me Tomb Raider 2 and the Dark Project for Christmas ... and we played them together, first TR2, then TDP. For the first minute of Thief, I was annoyed that it was in first person compared to TR.
But Bafford's mansion just had one kicker after another that kept making it better and better (the rest of this post might be spoilerish if you haven't played the mission, but no plot details) ... the 'bear pits' conversation. Trying to run in through the front and getting hacked. The walking guard that says 'evening'. Our first glimpse of Benny! Falling into the sewers ... and I think I was really won when I was swimming and reached the first larger chamber to see the streams of water pouring down from the ceiling in the pool around you and you could hear it splattering actually around you as you turned (the particle effects and the sound!). It was a pretty magical moment when the first person effect really hit home. Then crawling out, "inside at last", the vase in the chest and laughing at trying to be so quiet then throwing it away (only funny the first time, though...), then onto the mansion. And the clincher for me was sneaking my way into the foyer and every step I'd take, something like six guards would cry out to each other simultaenously ... *Did you just hear that!*, *hello?*, *what was that?*, *stand forth and be recognized* ... and then it finally hit me: <3

that happened to me, haha. i wasn't expecting the undead...
You should have listened more closely to the briefing then, you taffer.
I've told this story before, but in the spirit of the Teletubbies, I'll tell it once again. Having spent countless hours in the Abyss, the labyrinth of worlds and Citadel Station, I just had to check out the demo of Looking Glass Studios' latest as soon as it came out. First time inside Bafford's, I wounded a guard on the second floor and he ran away shouting for help. Moments later, I was looking down from a balcony when that guard ran into the hall and told other guards "there's a thief lurking about." The other guards immediately started searching for the intruder. It was then that I realized this was no ordinary game.

A friend bought a new video card and T2 came with it. He didn't want any of the games, so he gave them to me when I got a new computer and he wanted to see what it could do graphically. None them but Thief held any interest for me, from what I could glean from the internet.
I like the feeling of being hidden, of people not knowing I'm there. It was a natural union, really. Running around in the mansions and warehouses just have me the exciting tingely feeling.

Yes, their main weapon is fear and surprise. I mean, their main two weapons are fear and surprise.Don

here's all hard of hearing. it's only through repeated replays and transcripts that i've been able to discern most of what is said.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103828) One thing that a lot of people overlook is the way LGS got going. They had a decent pedigree, working with Richard Garriot in the early days. In fact, I was saying a lot of the quotes from Thief back in the 80's, because of games like Might and Magic and Ultima. I don't think a lot of people realise that the atmosphere of Dark Project was partially the realisation of old crpg ideas. The Hammers were obviously somewhat inspired by Ultima's "Guards". A lot of the old english sayings were developed throughout the M&M and Ultima series'. Thief: The Dark Project was no accident. These people knew exactly what they had on their hands and crafted it perfectly. They milked every last drop out of it. Truly a masterpiece. *sigh*

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103974) Back in the early/mid 80's I became a rabid fan of the crpg movement. Along the way, I was turned on to Blue Sky/Looking Glass after reading in magazines about their affiliation with Richard Garriot. I followed their games, whilst staying true to the evolving crpg's. When Thief came out, I mistakenly looked away in favour of Might and Magic VI. A half a year later my little brother convinced me to play it for real. Obviously, I was blown away. The similarities to old crpg's and the realised environments we had dreamed about drew me right in. I've been a Taffer ever since.

I was looking through the gaming section and picked up a copy of Thief:TDP. Not a big fan of rambo-shooting games so the whole sneaking around a medieval setting thing was interesting. Took it home and hooked ever since.
Personally I prefer T:TMA coz of the more human environments. I love how the game allows you to play it in so many different ways, you can rambo if you want and slaughter everything in your path, or you can sneak around making sure everything is left exactly as you found it. I spent hours and hours exploring Baffords, playing it in different ways.
And did I mention the great fan community here and all the fan missions?!

My friend gave me a warez copy of Thief 2, and said it was pretty cool. I played it, and by the time I completed Shipping and Receiving, I realised I was having the time of my video game life, and was severely pissed off at having to miss out on the cutscenes. I went to EB, and bought what was the last original box of Thief 2 for $60. Months later, the $20 sold-out version came out, and I had no regrets. If there was some way for the original LGS to have my money, I wish they could.
Plus I have the original snazzy box and manual :)

Me too! :laff:
Me three :) You have no idea how cool it was to "out-thief" people in an FPS such as Unreal tournament by actually making use of the shadows, and the "fiegn death" feature :)
