My wife laughs when I do get a new game, and I start exploring the entire area available "just in case...you never know where people will hide their loot!"
Exactly! Thief has completely changed the way I play games, whether there's a stealth aspect or not. I always "sneak" around corners just in case an enemy might be there and see me, I try my best to lean or peak when possible, I skirt around the edges to avoid being seen (since most games don't let you hide in "shadows"), and I explore every nook and cranny because you never know where things might be hidden. :-)

Like so many, I started on Zork (text only, yes, I AM that old) then Wolfenstein. Games were either puzzles or shoot-em-ups. Then, when Thief Gold arrived on my computer I LOVED the fact that I didn't have to kill poor wee alsations or grunt soldiers to succeed.
I guess I'm just a softie, but I even feel bad about blackjacking some guards. That's why the challenge of playing expert level just appealed to me so much. In certain levels you're actually penalised for biffing or killing.
Oh, and the whole glamour of Garrett, the Hammerites, the Mechanists... you know, the WORLD of Thief.
Doncha just love it ?

I will admit nothing of the sort.
A streamlined, consolized, 3rd person underestimation of the audience shows how a real game should play? No.
It introduces the masses to how cool stealth gameplay is. You can't say the game is nothing like Thief. I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much otherwise.

I also enjoyed playing Painkiller, but from this I wouldn't draw the conclusion that Painkiller is like Thief just because I enjoyed it. :ebil:

I enjoyed it as a Thief game - that was implied.
Thanks once again for picking out a trivial detail just for the sake of arguing.

You're welcome. Always a pleasure to help you clear up the details. :)

Thief was my first game in the FPA (First Person Action/Shooting genre).
Prior to that, I had pretty much restricted myself to flight sims, strategy, and action sims(read: mechs). When I purchased a Flight Yoke for my civilian simming activities, it included a driver CD with demos with a lot of short demos on it, including something I need not mention.
After messing around with the various programs on it, I ended up getting to Thief and looking at the manual. After reading and re-reading the various descriptions on what you could do in the game, it began to sound like a simply incredible adventure. The rest followed. As I was not, at the time, allowed to purchase or play games, I found a way around the rule: My soundcard was an old, low quality model, and there was a fading interest in voice dictation present. I purchased a new Sound Blaster Live, citing higher input quality, and playing multimedia with it. What I did not mention, is that the game included a sizeable software bundle, worth almost as much as the card itself: full versions Need for Speed, Most Wanted, Descent 3, and Thief: The Dark Project.
I remember the first time I played Cathedral. At one point I fell down an elevator( the one in the observatory) while trying to reach the button, walked out, and a haunt literally jumped in front of my screen, cackling. I ran back to the elevator, and kept frantically stabbing and hitting the button repeatedly to rise the elevator, in an embarrassing rush of sheer terror. I still vividly recall almost my whole body being out of control as I did it, but somehow I managed to remain silent the whole time.

This might sound odd, but i was hooked by Thief: DS, the fun of running around, stealing loot, knocking people out, the freakiness of the Cradle level, and recently i brought Thief II and having lots of fun.:D :D :D :D
