Wouldn't it have been cool that, instead of joining with the resistance, you stayed with UNATCO and sided with Simons and Page? It could have been a completely alternative storyline, starting at the point where you have to kill Lebedev, ie spare him and you take the good path, kill him and you take the evil path. Imagine if we redid the missions with the roles inverted, like you go to Hong Kong to assassinate Tracer Tong, steal the Dragon's Tooth and destroy the Luminous Path, who are plotting to blow up the UC, or on the Gray Death freigther, which NSF troops are plotting to blow up and you have to go around killing them and disabling their bombs. Then you'd go find and exterminate Silhouette in Paris and the surviving Illuminati. The ending is then ambiguous, but supposedly you get the same kind of rewards Simmons would have been promised (or maybe you conspire with Simmons to bump off Page and take everything for yourselves). Instead of fighting bosses like Hermann and Simmons you'd fight the good guys like Sam Carter, or even your own brother.
Anyway, when I first played the game, I thought that it was possible to play like that ('cause I deliberately refused to kill Lebedev).

I think that in any case they would be too paranoid to let you live too long. You're potentially too powerful ever to trust completely, and sooner or later, once enough useful info had been gathered about the performance of your implants, they'd do you in. You would be one of the few people who could be a real threat to Page.
I am sure that Walton Simons would suffer a similar fate, once Bob Page merged with Helios and no longer needed him.

OR -- we could have an alternate storyline in which the goal of the game is to murder the "thanks fer gettin me in" girls as brutally and entertainingly as possible.

Im with Frozenman on this one, although that wouldnt really be evil, more like good, incredibly good, the salvation of the world.(or at least the lucky money club)

Me too. It was kind of depressing for a while after I found out that the dynamic storyline wasn't all that dynamic after all.
Shame :(
(Still a great game, don't get me wrong... maybe in DX2 eh? :)).

Yes, ever notice how Bob Page never says anything, never complains, never threatens, when you kill Simons? I was all ready to hear taunts and nastiness from Page, but - nothing. I finally figured I'd done Page a favor.
Remember that in addition to Page, that JC, Paul, and Simons can all do the merge. That makes all 3 a threat to Page.
Simons doing the merge - now *that's* a creepy thought. Consider that if you don't kill Simons (and you *can* finish the game without killing him) that Simons can go for Helios while your back is turned. No, he doesn't - I tried leaving him alive to see if he'd turn up - but he so easily could have.

You know what reminds me of that? The Everett/ Lucius DeBeers drama. I remember Everett's message after I decided to take DeBeers off life support. I expected Everett to be hopping mad, but he was only annoyed that I was mucking about with his stuff instead of going about my next mission. DeBeers was just a tool to him just as Simons was just a tool to Page.
The first time I played through DX I didn't find DeBeers so I didn't think the Illuminati were all that bad. But after finding DeBeers, I realized that Everett and Page were cut from the same cloth. Made not picking the Illuminati ending a lot easier :).

Oh yeah! That would be a real Dark Age ending. I think Simons was actually more evil, or at least more brutal and sadistic, than Page.

I agree...finding DeBeers really let a lot out about who Everett really is....really only left the Helios ending for me...I didnt like the idea of ending communications like Tong suggested. If you think about it...Page and Everett could easily switch places...perhaps they both had the same ambitions...Everett was able to get rid of DeBeers, but Page acted faster and took care of the other rulers (Everett, DuClare, and Dowd) before Everett could move again.

Hmmm.... perhaps that's how they will handle the sequel... take it from a different direction a la the HalfLife sequel.
Imagine the drama of playing one of the MJ12 troopers!
** cutscene **
Player (MJ12 troop): I heard that there's a guy giving you some trouble.
Second MJ12 troop: It's Denton. Remember the briefing.
Player: Right, I remember. He looks like some kind of mech.
Trooper: It's Denton. Remember the briefing.
Player: Right. Well, gotta go.

The possibilities are endless. <IMG SRC="joker.gif" border="0">
