What if Eidos wanted to expand the Thief genre... - by Gambit

Just to shake imagination a bit...
What if Eidos decided to move the Thief universe into other gaming genres, would it work ?
Real Time Strategy: Pagans vs Hammerites. You can control one faction from an isometric view. Pagans can gather resources quickly but their buildings are fragile. All Hammer units can both gather resources and fight, and their building are damn strong.
Pure First Person Shooter: Hmm... Imagine Hexen or Heretic. You are a powerful mage with a heck of a magic wand. The black hand mages sentenced you to death for using black magic and now you must blast your way out from their towers.
Adventure: Garrett´s stealth is now based on puzzle solving, like finding a way to distract a guard (click bottle icon at inventory and put it on the table before he comes back from his patrol, etc).
Life simulation: You are a dweller of the City. Imagine The Sims but much more difficult. You choose your neightbourhood, religion, faction if possible, and try to make a living. Take care of the rising food prices, buy viktrolas to entertain your guests, and if you want burricks in your basement... well it´s your mansion anyway.
City simulation: You are... the Baron! Sin City meets Stronghold. You must keep everyone alive and fed. And also make sure that each faction doesn´t start a bloodbath on your city. And repel away enemy cities attacks. And build a new clocktower...
Platform: Fun for kids as you play Burrick Island Adventure. It´s like Yoshi but with barfs.
Horror Survival: You are inspector Drept, a mother just ask you for help. Her daughter entered the craddle out of curiosity. Go there, take her out and... try to stay alive and sane. Oh, and you can´t sneak as well as Garrett or fight like a full armored hammerite. Good luck.
Music: Drunken hero. Sing all Eric Brosius themes along with Benny. Actually he sings and you play a medieval guitar.

What if pigs could fly. About as interesting.

How about a Thief themed kart racing game?
Oh, wait.

It would not really work as well... RTS and Horror game are the best shots i think, but even that would proably not be so cool...
Stealth > all ^^ even strategies.

First of all, you've got some excellent sounding and most probably commercially profitable ideas there. Shaking the imagination is good! For example, the Might and Magic rpg series expanded quite successfuly into the turn-based strategy series known as Heroes of Might and Magic.
Unfortunately, the Might and Magic rpg series first released to the fans 4 classic (true to the series) games before branching out. The fanbase was as rabid as this old Dark Project was, in the early days... The early Thief fans only got one, maybe two classic games that fit into this elite form of gaming design. Can we please just have another real Thief game?? Might and Magic made eight classic games in the rpg series over a 15 year period, before crapping out with IX of course.
While it is always good to have dreams, remember that the *true* fans of Thief are *still* waiting for "Dark Project II" :ebil:
Even a half hearted attempt that was *true to the form* would completely dominate any of these other outlandish concepts for the Thief brand series.

Not really. If they did they would just be fat pigeons. :)

I think the more fruitful expansion would be to extend Thief's stealth gameplay into other settings ... scifi, cyberpunk, cold war, ninja, etc.

Fortunately, or unfortunately for some, Eidos isn't doing anything with Thief anytime soon.
Guitar Hero World Tour, however, is just 2 weeks out:D

I guess you didn't mention a stats-&-party based traditional CRPG set in the Thief universe because that would actually be a good idea? ;)
