What, in your honest opinion, is THE most advanced first-person game for its time? - by DentonSHODAN

I say Thief. I guess, considering what site this is, I won't have to remind you all of you what it does better than anything else before and after.
What, rabid fanboyism? :D
Unreal blew me away. It blew my 486 DX2-50 away too, poor little thing. It just couldn't cope.

How about SiN? It has computers in the game world that you actually "use" instead of just highlighting and clicking on. You can access DOS prompts on the machines, scroll through menus and the like. What was really impressive was that if you started typing on a terminal and then stepped back, the text would remain on the computer screen *in the game world*. The displays were updated in real-time in a game from 1998!

Yeah, it looks amazing. To be honest, I like the 2600 version, but it always felt like it was missing a lot, and it's kinda neat that the 8-bit Atari version filled a lot of the gaps. I had a 1030XL or something so I'm not entirely sure why I never picked it up, I guess it just seemed redundant at the time to own 2 copies of the same game.

I have to say Halflife! I will never forget riding the tram and listening to the voice, and when the tram stopped and Barney welcomed you, I waited. I thought it was a cutscene, as all fps type games had started with up until that point, so I had no clue that I was in the game and could have looked around. I waited and waited for the cutscene to end and the game to load. I finaly got frustrated and hit my desk thinking the game was broke. I noticed the screen move and realized I was already in the game. I was so wowed that my jaw dropped and my eyes went wide with aw. Once I realized this I had to start over so I could properly enjoy the tram ride and look around. I love thief and system shock, but nothing compares to that moment for me.:thumb:

Some other ones I haven't seen mentioned would be SubLogic Flight Simulator and Papyrus' Indy 500.

Thief, hands down. It may not have fancy graphics but the gameplay of stealth and FPS combined was pretty groundbreaking for it's time.

Thief had a lot of very advanced things that were more under the hood than others. The sound propagation system was years ahead of its time - for example, the ability to listen in on another room by leaning against a door is something that even games today rarely include. Hell, lots of games today don't even treat doors as any kind of obstruction as far as sound is concerned. Back in 2000, distance and direction and obstructions were very new considerations in the world of video game sound.

The computer version came first, so it's more that the 2600 version created those gaps.

It's always a pleasure to see it crop up again in later games though. Example would be the Source engine- gunfire from someone off in the distance will sound different and muted compared to someone shooting right next to you.

Maze War, Driller and Castle Master (absolutely blew me away, that one), Elite, System Shock 1.
Edit: shit, how did I forget Midwinter and Damocles?
