Probably keeps you quiet and still while they lash the bad blood out of you. Or quiet and still after the infecton sets in. I'm surprised they didn't consider making Cutty swallow sour mash.

Corn meal or smashed fresh corn, water, sugar.
Put in a barrel, or crock for small quantities, and allowed to ferment.
Then the liquid is drained off and run through a still to produce Corn Whiskey, or in some areas, MOONSHINE, Panther Piss, White Lightning, Corn Squeezins and other homemade alcohol.
Sour Mash, is the fermented corn and sugar to be specific, but the term is used equally to name the mix that becomes fermented.
