I'm a graphic designer, working for a small (but awesome) publishing house. We do some of the best books in the country. Once in a while I also dive into freelance illustration, but I can't really imagine it becoming my primary job.

Do I seem like the kind of person to care about cool?
Yes:

I'm not really in a position to publicly state what I'm doing.
See, normally people who aren't in a position to publicly state what they're doing, do not draw attention to that fact. In fact, I would say that out of the population of people who've explicitly declared to the internet that they cannot declare what they do,
most are not doing anything of the kind at all.

RBJ: Why was the sojourn ill-advised?
And let us know if the political writing pans off, I'm sure we'd all love to read it.

Of course not. It isn't any secret squirrel shit, but due to unsecured internet its imprudent to state specifics until everything's up and running. The reasons are less mysterious and more practical. For example, saying when I leave allows the locals to figure out that there's a convoy about to move out from point A to B, which allows them to have a bomb ready for it. Its gotten better lately as awareness grows, but there's been quite a few instances of dumbasses telling family or putting up facebook statuses like "Big mission tomorrow" and lives were lost as a result.
A more recent trend is to download pictures people upload from smartphones. A lot of people don't know it, but Iphone pictures come witih GPS data embedded in the picture. Insurgents used that feature to launch accurate rocket attacks and successfully hit one unit's barracks with it.
The best way to tell if somebody is in a high security situation is if they vanish without a trace. Logging into any account you use regularly(forums, email, bank, you name it) allows you to be identified either through logs or by data minng.

When they find out about (

You're not cool, Triple-C. You. Are.

Vasquez's mockery belies assumptions that are ignorant at best and more probably imbecilishly stupid.
A lot of what people associate with "secret agent shit" is fairly routine, especially in this day and age where just about all electronic communications are monitored. And even mundane information and items are useful if uncontrolled. One example is that I've heard about IED's being made out of mundane stuff that people throw in the trash without even thinking of it.
Honestly its better to take whatever preconceptions you have about how the Militay or even Intel work is like and chuck them. Because they are usually formed Hollywood, and Hollywood knows jack squat.

Look up the term "mensuration" to find out why that remark is stupid.
