what is your opinion on other resources being used in thief fan missions - by downwinder

for example there are a small hand full that use system shock textures=i get happy when i see it done
so i want to know what other games textures can be used in thief fan missions
what do you all think when it is done
maybe after the current contest we can do a other resource contest making a fan mission with only other resources/textures=looks only
maybe then some fan mission author could be inspired to make a mission that has a futuristic theme to it
one idea i kinda got from a mission already done is ,starting in a thief looking universe then come across a weird door and once behind it the world looks completely different then anything you know/matrix kinda stuff
make it seem like the thief universe is like a simulation/assassins creed type stuff ,but completely different story
look forward to hear all comments and thank you in advance

I think technically speaking we aren't allowed to use resources from other games.

As John said, I don't think we are allowed to rip contents from other games to put it in this one, unless we do get the owners consent. Although maybe strongly-inspired content would be ok? Personally, I'm not a big fan of crossover fan missions because it looks a bit bizarre, I don't really know how to explain it, but everything still looks Thief-ish.
But when it is well though-out well the result can be quite amazing (yes, I'm talking about you The Mask of Agamemnon, you handsome-looking devil)
I'm more interested in seeing what the author and his/her inspiration created, it's always quite unique and, in my opinion, more interesting than nods to other games. Yet, I wouldn't mind seeing what the community can create with your idea downwinder (of course through inspiration, not by straight-out ripping contents) ;)

i was just talking about using textures and some in game assets
for example the system shock soda machine/system shock enemy skins,wall/floor texture/etc
of course on a new map design
so it would not be a ripoff since no map was used just assets
and just a fan mission so no money being made =no laws being broken
and not sure you know but half life has a ton of mods that use a lot more things including maps and since they not making money on it ,no law broken
also system shock 2 came out in 1999 i don't think they would care if people used say a soda machine in there fan mission
not sure if my response is to much, but i was getting the feeling you implying its against the law and its not
i don't even think company's can do squat if people use shit for mods if they not trying to make money on it,or not worth there time to sue some person who used a soda machine in a mission they created
i am not talking about using a entire level on thief

I used iD Software's DooM textures when I did DooM for Thief 2. Heretic is another one, though these were re-done in hi-rez and not from the original game. Also, Strife! and Return to Tarnhill.
Never caught any flak from anyone. I did try to contact the makers of Strife! for permission but they had taken other career paths and could not be located.
Several years ago, a team was re-making DooM II from the ground up into a 3D engine of some sort, and had secured permission to use some original artwork and such. Then someone started pitching a bitch and it got shut down cold. Couldn't even use the name 'DooM' in any form or fashion. IIRC, it lost interest and the developers gave up.

Yes you're right, I doubt anyone would get into any trouble too, I just wouldn't feel confortable using textures/objects from another game in general. That's why I think of re-creating them instead of simply using them, think of it as me being cautious more than anything else. Of course you should be ok if you use stuff from SS2
