If the question covers the whole ambient and score for the games, then I say it should be abstract, surreal, and amazingly effective at creating tension, startling and adrenalizing moments without being a typical "BOO!" moment, sadness, despair, loneliness, isolation, and paradoxically, energizing and empowering the player to get the mission done for reasons beyond the mission itself, but encouraging caution. Abstract, not a movie score, simple but unforgettable, and I think it was a mistake for the Thief music to become subtle and hidden rather than welcomingly noticeable.

I was just getting in to PC gaming, and had tried a couple of games that ultimately left me disappointed. I saw Thief Gold on the rack soon after it came out and was intrigued by the premise. So I took a chance and bought the game. I took it home and fired it up. When that distorted industrial rock score started with the game opener- I knew absolutely that this was THE game. It was perfect. Sublime. I had come home and entered gaming nirvana.
I've always really liked the ambients in all three games. They've always really fit perfectly- they don't really stand out to me, but that's what they're for. More mood setting than attention getting.
I would love to fire up Thief 4 and have that same Thief experience with the opening intro and cutscene. I know the style of music isn't something you could expect to hear in The City, but it captures the mood perfectly, and to me is integral to the Thief experience.

May i know why Electronic music was not added within that music styles list?
in case you don´t know all thiefs games soundtrack have electronic music , I hope Eric Brosius will be hired again to make he´s excellent tracks, i love his spooky musics, relaxing shady musics..."the old quarter" "the pagan´s village" ,"the assassin´s", "the baddford´s septer" "the haunted cathedral"...and other missions that have great ambient musics...music is essencial for the quality game, Thief could have never been my favourite game if it wasn´t for its excellent ambient musics.
And please, let´s hope there is not metal, pop, rock or any of that primitive music, it takes away all the misticism that thief has.
My choice would be Electronic...or classic.
