Hmmm.. what nine days?? And who is/was Gervaisius?
jtr7 on 28/3/2009 at 07:00
TDS takes place over nine consecutive days.
Lord Bram Gervaisius of the Clan Gervaisius not only owned the manor that Casing the Joint and Masks were set in, but in TDP/Gold, he commissioned Sangar to seek antiquities, wanting Precursor masks most of all. Sangar gives the commission to Garrett and he finds Precursor masks in the Lost City, and then Garrett finds them again in TMA's Masks. Gervasius [sic] also signed one of the guestbooks at Wieldstrom Museum, complimenting the Curator for the impressive Cyclopean Magistrate statue with the Coethe Medallion around it's neck.:D

Side thought for a moment - Jason, quick check - does anyone else comment on the Servant-speech?
No one comments on the speech, only the one person who writes to Maddy gets close enough, saying he/she heard the weeping when they went up to peek behind the mask.
I confirmed in-game that the other AI react (mostly) to a running Masked Servant, like they react to nearly any running AI. I had to run the "simulation" twice, because the first time was nicely coincidental and looked just like they were speaking to the guards. In LotP, with awareness of my presence toggled off, I startled the Servants in the Kitchen by thumping a tray table with the blackjack, until the short one ran off, saying "Tell the others there is a thief," and a noblewoman obeyed before the Servant started running again. It ran by the first guard posted outside Karras's office, and he didn't react, but the AI in the room across the hall did. The Servant stopped and turned just inside the room, while the nobles and another guard started running and hunting. The Servant stood there while saying, "This one has seen an intruder", "Tell the others..." It was almost perfect, and looked like verbal communication. The second time, the Servant in the Dining Hall across from the Kitchen, only spoke as it was looking for me, I scared it into running by tossing a tray into the wall. It said nothing...and every AI it ran by went on full alert, including the guard outside Karras's office, and the nobles and other Servants ran off in two directions alerting other AI.

This unused conversation from Masks is quite confusing, however you look at it:
1) the Priest actually hears what the Servant is saying, and is just cruel
2) the Priest hears that the Servant is speaking, but doesn't really pay attention to what he is saying
3) the Priest can't hear what the Servant is saying; the Priest is just talking to himself - as all of the people in the Thiefverse are wont to do (that he "apparently" adresses his Servant could be explained with how some people talk to their pets)
Since this one converstaion doesn't really look like a real conversation - they're not really talking TO each other as much as simply BOTH talking- option 3) might seem the most logical. Another solution could be that the Servant was originally supposed to say something else altogether, but due to time constraint they didn't finish that part and finally dropped this conversation completely.
But then we have

Sadly, we don't know if he just meant "wordless crying" or the "please kill me sobbing".
That nobody ever heard a Servant could be because those who have servants usually don't pay any attention to them (something along the lines of " The presence of the servant shall be felt, but never must the servant be seen"). As a noble in the City you wouldn't talk to your servants - only your butler/head servant/ whatever. And the Servants (uper case S again) don't cry that loudly. Garrett has to be pretty close to them and it has to be rather quiet to hear them.
Let's say it's actually only Garrett that hears the Servant's and his "operator's" voices.
This would make the whole affair even creepier. It would mean that the Servant's soul/spirit/mind/??? is held prisoner in his dead(?) body (or at least in a body that isn't his own anymore, i.e. he can't control it anymore).
And about whether the masked Servants work like under drugs or hypnosis, and how good they'd be at their work.
I don't know what Karras is saying about their exact abilities; and the couple in Angelwatch is just making idle converstaion (or he is trying to soothe her doubts) and doesn't actually know what a Servant is and isn't able to do.
But I doubt, anyone would use a Servant for any delicate kind of work, without checking if they are able to do that work.
So they either just use them for the most basic of work, or they are trained whatever special skills they need (cooking, gardening).
Maybe they don't need the training and their other voice is telling them how to do things like cooking, sweeping etc
Seeing that they need to be ordered to go look for the source of a noise, I can just imagine that they would watch the food burn if not told to take it of the stove.

If it's true they can cook and garden so well, and that they did prepare the meal that was served to the guests, then we just never get a chance to hear those commands.

Here's something I should've brought up sooner, had I not been focused elsewhere:
From
M11b08: "He had transformed wretched humans into agents of The Builder's will, controlled directly by the influence of Karras' machines."
----
The conversation with the priest is fully-constructed in the schemas, so that's how it would've gone, but the other way to look at it, is as a morbid joke. The Priest is droning and the Servant is rolling it's eyes, unable to flee the bothersome, long-winded speech. Oh god, kill me now. It doesn't fit the ethos, but it makes more sense by itself that way.:joke:

I've just finished transcribing what they say and posted all their words:
(

I did not include the wordless sounds of panting, grunting, whimpering, or weeping for joy and laughing bitterly upon dying or getting KO'd.
