It's not stated plainly, but it's somewhat accepted fanon. In one of the Viktrola messages (karvic02.wav) Karras says, "The Servant knows only how to tirelessly perform thy will...be it cooking, cleaning, or gardening...," and "...ready always to perform your bidding..."
In karvic03 he says "...they are models of efficiency."
Do they take off their own masks and feed themselves? The masked guards seem to have the mask bolted to their heads, but the Masked Servants are wearing a helmeted mask.
This was UNUSED, but we don't really know why, M12B10.str:
"Contents of this Shipment: 1 Masked Servant. Please do not attempt to remove mask. Place in the care of Mechanist caretakers."
We can't know if all the nobles with Servants also had such "Mechanist Handlers".

Interesting!! Very interesting..
Who know what were supposed to be the purpose..

they wouldn't need to eat or sleep if they were another means for suppling that energy that body needs. Hell, it is (in theory) possible to run a human body on a battery.. anyway, i think i made a point about this at somepoint but it doesn't really matter.

Impossible... A human body (like all other mechanical compositions, but more fast) "suffer" from parts decayedness, so the food, through the digestive apparatus, has the purpose not only to give energy, but to give the proper substances to make possible the riparation (like in the case of cellular decayedness though, or damaging of internal capillaries).
So, in my opinion, it were impossible to aliment them only with a battery, if we are trying to get more realistic than all.

It's entirely possible that Karras traps the souls of the poor buggers in a gem or somesuch; this would enable the Servants to be entirely mechanical, but also having human(ish) intellect. This also explains why they don't just go nuts and kill the Mechanists from the get-go, as Karras could've reprogrammed the souls with complete obedience to their master(s), but be sloppy enough to remove their sense of spiritual (?) pain.

How about the Servants being "fed" by magic? If the mask ha a built-in magic-flow control, it might twist the current of magic to healing and nutritive purposes (like the healing potion :p). Or using the magic to continously "enbalm" the bodies of the poor fellers.

the human body can in theory work on batteries, it would, however, require small changes. For more information, you will have to look up some medicial essay's on man-made parts and living beyond 'normal' age. I can't remember which ones are the best at the moment, and my information is a few years out of date (I was researching the real-life 'cyborg' problem a few years back for something i was working on).
as for the beacons, i thought it was clear.. it was a little signal that works via a radio-like link that tells the servants to head to soulforge.
Though he is a question, how much damage does the rust gas do? why did machines of metal get badly damaged?

Presumably their fuel supply was organic.
