Two myths there.
Canon:
The machines weren't damaged by the rust-gas.
They simply ran out of fuel after the rust-gas had already settled into dust.
ManicMan on 21/3/2009 at 14:00
the theory that they weren't damage since to go against what is shown. That is clearly one damaged mech at the end. Since the fuel seams to be coal for Robots, the fuel idea doesn't seam to quite add up.. i guess the servants 'organic' parts would be destored, Karras wouldn't care about them, but his machines are a different matter (though i might explain why soo many seam to be at soul forge at the end.

Of course, you're assuming that the bot died because its fuel supply was somehow cut short by the rust gas. It may have been simply because it ran out of coal, and, therefore, ran out of power.

Don't forget the bots were battling Viki for awhile. We don't know how long she was at it before Garrett arrived. That combat bot's running down, it moves slower and slower, and its voice slows down and stops. Water arrows are much more effective than the rust-gas. In fact, the rust-gas did nothing. It doesn't strip oxygen from the air, either. It simply ran out of fuel, and clearly did not have it's fuel sucked out if it's still moving while the gas has already settled as dust. The rust-gas doesn't do a dang thing to inorganic materials, and I believe the "ruin of Soulforge" is a result of people tearing the place down in the time following Karras's death.
I also have no reason to believe the fuel is organic and not a flammable metal composition. The canon provides a totally feasible way for Karras's whole plan to go through to completion, except taking his place by the Builder's side.

Param, param. NOPE!
The rust gas did precisely the same that 2 water or 1 simple gas arrow does!
:cheeky:
Quite the simplest solution.

How about the Servants being "fed" by magic? If the mask ha a built-in magic-flow control, it might twist the current of magic to healing and nutritive purposes (like the healing potion :p). Or using the magic to continously "enbalm" the bodies of the poor fellers.
The Mechanist didn't used the magic, just simply because they were AGAINST the magic, and for the technologies. This theory is not correct, in my opinion.

hee, gonna get told of for doing the 'Mechinists are for machines, not magic' bit? i got it in the neck for that already... i'm starting to get the feeling though, i only got it cause of who i am... intresting thought and would say i'm more known in wider circles then i thought... probebly not the case though...
I think the Rust gas clearly did something because can't you see Rust on the robot? i got the TG disk in at the moment, so i'll have to wait until later to be able to check with the T2 file.

I said that, but I was pointed out and told that the Mechanists DID use Magic (priests throw flaming gears at you). Though I haven't seen this (probebly cause I don't mess around with and get caught by priests for this to happen)
I though one of the points of the Mechanists was that everything was machines (something which the hammers didn't like and though they did use a number of machines to do basic jobs, they still prefered to use there hands when every possible) but it was pointed out that this wasn't the case so i started to look into it more... and the Mechanists just seam like alot less of a threat to me since..
