And we don't know if the cultivators have to be as big as they are; maybe the Mechanists managed to build them smaller.
The Servants seem to somehow still cling to life. We hear them crying and sobbing. And if you kill one, you fail your No killing (of humans) objective.
jtr7 posted this one game info, where they mention a "mechanist caretaker" or such. That at least hints that there is some maintenance to be done. Maybe they get some IV-line/ protein bar/ nutritious fluid inserted every once in a while.

Karras does say that they will leave the nobles home every once in a while for minor work and upgrades. This is true, though we don't know if this work was just to install the rust gas or not, i doubt it would have been... Karras did seam to want to take longer with his plans but Viktoria's attack made him speed everything up (or maybe, there was something which happened before that which help speed everything up?) This upgrade and stuff could easily be something like food.

http://www.tesp.co.uk/thief_rustgas.jpgNow here, you can see the size of the cultivators (Middle-top screen) and the Rust Gas container (Far Left, Top Screen) and then in the second image, you can see the size of that overall container compared to Garrett. That is clearly much smaller then shown in Game and, i think, would be able go into the mouth.

Why does the rust gas need to be stored in the same place? again, in the movie clip, the gas enters via one chamber, and then gets to the Cultivator. Perhaps just the Cultivator is in the mouth, the rust gas itself is elsewhere.
In facts, I readed somewhere in the game that the cultivator was just behind the mask!

Any the voices of the servants, to me, COULD (and this is just a could) be made not via the mouth, but maybe a 'fake' mouth, much like Garrett's fake eye. This the 'robotic' echoy sound... of course, this is just an idea,
I've had the same idea too..

Some excerpts from T2's books. No real clues as to where the cultivator is kept, though.
Quote:
"Contents of this Shipment: 1 Masked Servant. Please do not attempt to remove mask. Place in the care of Mechanist caretakers."
Quote:
"Karras saw that a person, an animal, a plant, anything ill-borne of nature, when consumed by the gaseous Necrotic Mutox would dissolve into rust. Karras had observed this many times, over and over again, for in it He felt the presence of Truth.
Whether released by a container or through the lips of a Servant's mask, Karras would observe the action of the gas from a spot as close to the area of effect as He possibly could in safety. When the rust settled, Karras would zealously scrutinize the remains for meaning."
Quote:
"He ordered me to find him some new street people to convert into Servants. Respectful, I ventured to ask him wherefore, since
our supply of Necrotic Mutox gas containers is gone and we hath no need for mindless slaves when the Builder's Children are such efficient workers. He told me that the Children could not manipulate some things with their appendages as well as a human might, and I was greatly shocked to hear Father Karras make such a comparison."
Perhaps the workings of the cultivators were installed into the masks themselves, without need for an actual bulky cultivator?
But no, that makes so sense, because of the briefing of
Casing:
Quote:
Viktoria: "...brass masks and [cultivators], 30
of each"
Garrett: "Each? So, they're connected?"
Viktoria: "We have to assume so."

We know Karras has
installed [the cultivators] in the masks of the servants

Good stuff, taffers!
If the Mechanists reverse-engineered the Cultivator to fit right behind the lips, and not just connected via a tube, then the rust-gas canister could still be anywhere else, connected to the Cultivator by a length of tube. The cutscene is the best bet for scale, and I think the cutscene depiction of the canister shows a smaller opening that could better connect directly to the Cultivator.
I agree about the in-game models. The lockpick models are about a foot long each, heh heh!

Hmmm... where is the gas canister in the cutscene? :weird:

That's where the gas comes from (on the right) before it goes through the Cultivator in the center.;)
You can see how small it is, and that it can just fit onto the Cultivator opening, which is how I scaled and put them together in that weird image I made.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/jtr7/RustGasCanister_Open.jpgI superimposed the close-up shot onto the medium shot to highlight the scale relative to Garrett and Viktoria. It's smaller, but it's still too big without removing something.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/jtr7/TMA_b16_00410.jpgTwo things:
1. Why the mummy wrappings? Just for looks? To honor the Precursors' views on death and the afterlife, with their tombs, sarcophagi, and canopic jars for organs? I guess the brass plated bikini bottom could pop open to evacuate waste matter.
2. Why install a mechanical voice when they have nothing to say that anyone cares to hear? All we hear is expressions of suffering and crying or the instructions to themselves.
How about a RoboCop concept? Except they are programmed to be house servants, artificially kept alive, must still eat, etc., and their wills are overriden. :D
ManicMan on 23/3/2009 at 08:00
of course, the problem with reverse-engineering idea is that why did they need a set number of them if they were making them them selfs.
I see the point about the voices BUT, who's to say they can't talk a bit more? As a Thief, we don't see or are able to give then orders. Maybe when they are given orders they say 'Yes' and their talking is what alerts overs, remember, they will run for help if they see something.
jtr7 on 23/3/2009 at 08:54
Many of the voice-overs are instructions to themselves:
"See what that is."
"See if someone is there."
"You heard a noise. Pay attention."
"Find him now."
"You have imagined things."
"Tell the others of this death."
ManicMan on 23/3/2009 at 09:17
yes, all of which seam to show 'something' is telling them what to do via speech.. which does seam like a kind of hypnotizing.
But then look at that one "Tell the others of this death." Which means they DO, in fact, talk to other people with stuff of note, we just don't hear it in game.
