Honestly, seeing the number of fan missions made per year, I'm even glad there are still fan missions, and I also hope that there will be an increasing number of them.
What I still like to see, is
- missions with snow
- anything quite unusual (modern day setting, daylight)
- pirate/ship missions
and I also can't get bored of classic mansion settings.

About the pirate and snowy mission you got some recently published!
For exemple, The Curse of the Skull Gobelet for the pirate, or Chalice of Souls for the snow...
what? I'm doing self-advertising? No... of course... I mean... no...
About the snow you have also Roofs of Gold ! :p

Contest idea:
Write a basic story (whether it's backstory as revealed through readables, or the plot points experienced by the player in the course of gameplay, or both). Be fairly specific about the characters involved, and the general shape of the drama (e.g., X character hires Y character to do Z, but ends up betraying X when W happens). But—here's the key part—make sure the story doesn't imply anything about where this takes place, or the style of mission. So each author will fill in the setting and theme themselves.

I also hate cutscenes, including intros (they just interrupt the gameplay, and I usually don't care about story).

I dislike missions that force me to ghost (
e.g., undead-heavy missions, many jailbreak missions, missions with lots of bots and few water arrows). I also hate cutscenes, including intros (they just interrupt the gameplay, and I usually don't care about story).
I'm pretty shocked by this... OO
Story is the core of the mission too and... what? :erg: billions of blackjacking, no ghosting?
Hey! This is a stealth game dude! If you are not obliged to ghost all the time in all mission the goal of the game is at least to primary try to ghost before knocking everybody out and dousing all torches, isn't it?
Plus no offense but I suspect you of being one of these players who never read the readme and rush at expert and rant because of the difficulty!
|Warning: Author grunting incoming|
The thing that get on my never is that Expert is supposed to be the highest difficulty level for as the name for "Expert".
That's why in ALL my missions I always try to make the expert difficulty very high because in my honnest opinion you are supposed to have played at least one single time the mission to know it a bit and have a better experience. Some people could complain I will not change my mind on that point because if everybody must play expert the first time they launch a new FM then why are Normal and Hard difficulties existing? This is absolutely none-sense !
Sometimes I'm really hesiting about doing the same difficulty name as Mission X, or removing the other difficulty choices.
Many players complain in Force Ghosting and blackjacking restriction but such restrictions are in Expert only for the most part of the mission! Because you are supposed to know some patrol route, how the map is, where to go etc.
So In futur mission, please to all players that rush on expert without trying the lowest difficulty level first : Stop ranting about the restrictions if these one exist only in expert. These one are presents for a good reason!

Jeez. It's just an opinion, man. You're still free to create whatever kind of missions you prefer.
No, I don't read the README—I shouldn't need to. Yes, I always play on Expert first (unless Expert forbids knockouts).
Few of the original missions require you to ghost, even on Expert. It's more common in FMs, but it's still far from the norm. Clearly you prefer ghost missions, but don't act like it's some kind of universal fact that Thief FMs have to require ghosting on Expert.
I have never "ranted" about any of the things you mention—please don't leap to conclusions about me.
Story is the core of the mission too
For those who enjoy story, I'm sure that's true. I am not one of those people. I don't think that video games are a very good medium for telling stories, and I don't think the stories told in video games are often very good. I think that Thief, in particular, is a poor medium for telling stories—since that generally means stuffing a mission full of long readables, and I find that poring through lots of readables really disrupts my flow. I know that I'm not alone in this.
The post asked what kind of fan missions I would like to play. I answered that question.

Of course it's just an opinion but I am allowed to disagree with your opinion :P
And I can confirm I actually completely disagree! xD But I will not carry on the debate because there are no interest in doing such thing.
I just said what am I thinking, nothing more! ;)

Firemage, At the risk of ruining our friendship, you could not be further from reality. Some people love blackjacking guards, the more the better. I hate (really hate) ghosting....yeah OK Thief is classified as a stealth game, but that's so boring IMHO. Bash the sods on the head and go for the loot, that's my motto and I have no intention of changing my game play style. I may be wrong here, but I suspect most authors believe that the plot is the most important aspect of a mission. I'm not to sure, for me it's the overall look, the feeling, the graphics, the really tough areas that take an hour or so to work out how to get to the next area, the jokes, the clever twists, the secrets....but plot....truth be told half the time I do not even bother reading the scrolls and books, and some authors have FAR too many books and scrolls in their missions. I just want to play, get as close to 100% loot as possible and beat the game, even if that means killing as many AI's as possible.
PS. Can I still beta test your next mission :D

Lol ! It needs more than an opinion to make such thing happening! xD You're right to like your way of playing mission! :)
I'm just saying I'm fed up with people who are astonned to see many game restriction and difficulty on expert. Expert is supposed to be the most challenging! ;) Never forget it!
