gar0709: "Heh heh heh... Now I know I’m a master thief—waltzing right into a bank vault. Time to find the recording."
"A master thief should be proficient enough to avoid murder."
"Littering the opera house with blood and corpses is not worthy of a master thief such as yourself. So pickpocket, rob, steal, hide, and even run if you have to, but don't kill anyone."
"The council voted we deal with him using the Enforcers, until Caduca informed us that Garrett was essential to overcoming difficult times ahead. And so our most promising acolyte left us.
Garrett pursued the life of a criminal, and with the Keeper training we had given him, he quickly became a master thief."
f11_03seen1: "Word on the street is...you let a few Pagans get too close last night. Surprised they left you alive. Heard they’s real vicious. Well, all that matters is you made it out...relatively unharmed, eh? Maybe next time you sneak up behind ‘em...womp ‘em over the head before they even know even you’re there. Not that I need to tell you...Mr. Master Thief."
f13_trans2: "This the best you can do? Maybe it ain't true...all the talk I hear about Garrett the master thief...still, it's good enough. I'll take it off your hands."
G: "Angelwatch? Is this how our arrangement is gonna work, you coming up with ways for me to get myself killed?"
V: "Is this really Garrett the Master Thief I hear talking? If danger is going to be a problem for you, then..."
"You are Garrett, the master thief. In the city where Garrett resides, crime and corruption are commonplace, wealthy nobles prey on the poor, and magic and machinery coexist uneasily."
m12v06c: "Even if the real Garrett were here, he'd be just as stumped as I am. Even a master thief probably gets stumped sometimes. Probably."
m11v74b: "Here's the so-called 'master thief' again. What's wrong, 'master thief'? Can't spring the lock on your cell door without your lockpicks, can you? Haw haw!"
m11v18a: "And just so you don't get any ideas...no one makes it out of Pavelock Prison alive. The few escapes we've had...well...let's just say they're dead now. Ain't no second chances for escaped prisoners...nope...we just cut 'em down on the street. 'Master thief'.... Pah! (Spits)."
"We've got some great plot twists planned for Thief 2 and I certainly don't want to ruin anyone's surprise and enjoyment of how the story unfolds but basically you can think of Thief 2 as a three act play. In the first act Garrett is just trying to make a living as a master Thief but he runs into increasing interference from the city sheriff."

Hello, it's me. Is that you...er...Garrett?

SM1GoldenDagger_002000
Yeah, that's right. I'm Garrett. Master thief, at your service. McFarley said you had a job for me, Brent, is it?
m12c0202
SM1GoldenDagger_003000
Indeed I do, I um, ah....
m12c0203
SM1GoldenDagger_004000
What? What's wrong?
m12c0204
SM1GoldenDagger_005000
Nothing, nothing. I just thought you'd look different, that's all. It's nothing.

I'm the greatest thief that ever lived, I ain't concerned about appearances. Anyway, with all that thievin' I do, I ain't got time for no baths or nothing.
m12c0206
SM1GoldenDagger_007000
I see. Completely understandable. Enough said. Anyway, let me tell you why I wanted to meet with you, Garrett.
m12c0207
SM1GoldenDagger_008000
Yeah, get on with it. I got a lot of job offers you know. You ain't the only merchant in town too uppity to get his own hands a bit dirty.
m12c0208
SM1GoldenDagger_009000
Of course. The object in question is of little monetary value...but has great sentimental meaning to me. It's the Orincross Dagger--you've probably heard of it, a stylish golden number, and it is currently out of its owner's hands...being scheduled for repairs at the Cothron's Armory.

SM1GoldenDagger_010000
The Orin...a golden dagger, eh? Sure I heard of it. I'm Garrett, ain't I? 'Cept it sounds plenty valuable to me.
m12c0210
SM1GoldenDagger_011000
Well it's not! The money I'll pay you to get it will be twice what it's worth. Anyway, it's one of a kind, you'd be hard pressed to find a fence who'd manage it for you.
m12c021
SM1GoldenDagger_012000
All right, all right. Go on.
m12c0212
SM1GoldenDagger_013000
As I said, it's being kept at Cothron's Armory--in the basement safe. That's where you come in, Garrett. As a master thief, you should have no trouble with it. Once you get it, put it in the donation's box outside that Hammerite place, Saint Edgar's. I'll leave the payment in the same box...once I have the dagger. I think that about covers it.
m12c0213
SM1GoldenDagger_014000
All right, Mr. Brent. And don't forget...if you want Garrett type services, you gotta offer Garrett type prices.

Hm1m1301: "Ahh, 'tis thee, the master thief. There is scant time to explain. The Trickster's foul beasts hath captured our High Priest, and if we cannot retake him alive, all shall be lost. We dare not try a rescue...we lack thy skills of stealth and treachery, and our enemies must surely kill him should we make a bold attempt. Bring him back to us alive and we may discuss how the Trickster himself can be defeated. He is held somewhere in the caverns and halls beyond that archway. May The Builder guide your steps."

That's AFAIK rather something that might be concluded from a distant perspective, but basically he is a pickpocket and low life.
I meant that always pointing out that he's THE master thief/larger-than-life hero etc. etc. would probably put the whole thing into an unfortunate direction. The conjectural enormous number of reloads in this community shows quite the opposite. :p Seriously, the thieving-for-a-living idea is quite noncredible in the first place, talking about other full-time thieves (c.f. the Downwinders) does IMHO the same mistake as Disney with its pirates – that is, turning a social/economical marginal phenomenon into a pseudo-self-sufficient element.
The fact that the game itself doesn't emphasize the master thief part too much and instead shows Garrett doing small jobs (break into a warehouse district, looks for treasure in abandoned tombs etc.) always appealed to me a lot.
