thief 1 - never played it
thief 2
for - huge maps,tons of freedom,superb AI for its day,creepy atmosphere,dark foreboding game,best bow & arrow
against - mainly its graphics are bad now and i cant play the game after playing TDS,the models look like cardboard cut out as do some of the buildings
thief 3
for - hilarious game,nice looking,superb voice acting,varied missions,freedom,good scary atmosphere
against - consolitis, maps could have been better, ragdoll is a bit hmm odd, worse fault is that its too easy on the expert setting\
overall i prefer TDS

Something which has only been mentioned once is the sound element of the game that really made it for me. I finished T:DS this morning after trying on and off for about a year (Computer troubles, forgetting about it etc etc) and it was again the use of sounds that made a difference to me. I can't think of any games which put such an emphasis on sound and the affects it has. Although i think the silent creep made it a little easy it was still a centre point of the whole thief series.
I downloaded something by one of the lead people on TDP and he said sound was one of the core elements in the construction of the game. Apart from the AI responses to sound the background music was absolutely stunning. The cradle in DS is the best example of that for me, really really added to the atmosphere.
The background and story definately made me wanting to play on, in both TMA and DS (i haven't got my hands on thief gold yet, i can't find anywhere that sells it and i don't have an ebay account anymore) it was important but the sound and the effects really made thief stand out for me.

I think Thief3 is one of the best PC games ever, mainly because of the mix of great level design and atmosphere, it's also one of the scariest games out there (and it's not even a pure horror game, quite an achievement imo!)
The other games in the series didnt impress me as much (a bit lacking in missions/level design and too linear/stiff) but they're still very good games of course, especially at the time when they were released.
