Well, I pretty much want a lot of stuff back instead of 'new things'.
First of all, I think that the old objective system should come back. You know, instead of just 'Collect 30/60/90% loot', it should be like 'Rob the dead! Collect at least 1000 loot!'. Same thing for 'special loot'. And, of course, the 'Don't kill!' as well.
And there is a feature in Splinter Cell that was really well designed. The fluid speed control. I'd love to see that implemented on Thief.
And yeah, I miss my good old floating torso and subtle headbob...
They've modified a lot of stuff that just didn't need to be. (Sure, some due the XBox limitations, but they're not all.) The old big maps, the old gadgets (rope arrows!), blackjacking mechanics (and for the Builder's sake, Garrett! Remove that damn 'Heal Blindness' glyph from your blackjack!) and decent damage for the blackjack. The old system was just grand.
To say the truth, I prefer the dagger over the sword, but hey, I never kind of used the sword anyway.
And....
Cutscenes, (video)briefings, debriefings... Hey, now we've got space. And tons of it. And videos are getting smaller and smaller.
And of course, our good old sepia briefings with stactic sprites :ebil:
Perhaps the damn near best thing to the good oldies is (

I'd like to see a return to the mission briefing style of the first two games. I also felt that the lore was somewhat simplified in the third, so a more indepth, thought out approach to that (again, as in the first two games).

I agree completely. That's the one aspect of Splinter Cell I'd like to see in Thief as well.

Apart from the obvious, being larger maps and free-roaming territories, sevaral factors that increase immersion by bringing in more realism. Such as
- less but tougher and more intelligent opponents
- a system that does not limit equipment in max numbers per item but weight units, also in effect for loot, increased weight also comes with agility penalties
- same for stealth profile, those that insist on waltzing around with a big sword should gain severe stealth penalty
- those that insist on taking a swim during thiefery should find a large part of their inventory made corrupt and suffer a stealth penalty and drown when too heavy
- reputation system, such that killing is allowed but increases the chance of being identified by "neutral" characters and of turning "friendly" characters hostile
- remove any in-game saves, saving only allowed at the beginning of chapters / missions
- add a dummy-mode that turns off all of the above for the 95% of players that take insult from playing a game, that does not portrait them as some sort of super-human
- add in a "traditionalist"-mode that lets players turn on all the broken game elements from the first two games, such as
^ forward-leaning-glitches
^ broken pathfinding that lets AI walk on the spot
^ AI that never runs during a search
^ jumping up and down increases your running speed by 30%
^ AI does not respond when being hit in the face by a water arrow or when bumping into a player that is in the shadows, or most anything else for that matter

I just wonder if the irony starts at the second or third point from the bottom.

The save-system? Im serious on that one. Its the way I play any game that comes with distinct sections / levels.
If I find myself unable to make progress that way, I admit that I am not fit to play the difficulty setting Im currently on and take a step back.
In the end its a very satisfying way to play and realize you have mastered a level.
A player's death / failure actually has some meaning then, it makes him fear for his life and act accordingly rather than take a leap-of-faith at every corner, knowing very well that the harshest possible consiquence will be a push of the quick-load button. Saving - cheating - no difference for me.

But you cannot impose it on everyone (without causing complaints about console elements especially here). It was enough over the last years to leave it to different playing styles and thus self-imposed rules. Maybe for a higher difficulty, but not in general.

My hopes:
- More minigames designed for xbox controllers
- Ability to play as 'Gretchen' (Garrett's hot thief sister)
- Radar in HUD with objective markers
- Moss and water arrows as DLC
- Spellcasting
- Invisibility cloak
- Silenced sniper rifle
- Other cool stuff like this

...rocket launcher, bio armour...

Don't forget important technological advancements, like not supporting anything other that 16:9 aspect ratio, cover system, checkpoint only saves, and a film grain effect that cannot be turned off.
