Sorry for stating what I would improve about a game in a thread that asks whats to improve about a game. How very rude of me.
Whats so 'personal' about not being able to rewind and undo any inconvenience caused by ones own actions? Its about the most natural thing there is.
Has anybody here played Dark Forces?

Possibly the fact that while you consider this to be the best option, other people might prefer a convenient system.

I see. The kind of 'personal' that can be attributed to right about every single other option as well, then.

Except that your proposal only is appealing for die-hard players, instead of thinking of how this game can be interesting for as many Thief fans as possible.
Albert on 15/6/2010 at 22:08
Are you guys all forgetting? One element of the thief games that made it a classic was it's minimalist interface. On top of that, and much like a game like Half-life, the players were free to move in-game 24-7, unless the level specified otherwise.
These are two elements that are, above all, important.

It would be more than nice, if T3 turns out to be a drunken nightmare from lots of acid that Garrett used instead of normal... stuff... Yeah, whatever, just don't eph up the story as bad as T3 did. Cloaked men doing things in the dark in style of Thief1/2 was more fun and didn't ruin my faith in the keepers as t3 did. Then again, that's over with, so whatever. But ingame cutscenes simply make Thief less.
I believe, that Thief 4 will be better than Thief 3 most certainly, maybe even better then one of the LGS originals.
Also the short lived tradition of a "Gold" expansion would be cool to have, in case they don't fail the game itself.
Hope they don't stress on pleasing us too much though.

Well, it's one of those with an even number in the title, so chances are that it will be bottom of the trash. Think of ThiAf as the equivalent to Star Sucks: Episode 1. An annoying child actor as the new protagonist, a child whom you want to throw into the nearest toilet or trashbag or something, and some cgi buddy who's name I have luckily forgotten by now. ... Actually, I haven't. Jar Jar Binks, wasn't it?
Or don't think of ThiAf like that, but I will.
In the unlikely event that I am wrong, I thus will be most pleasantly surprised. In the more likely case that I am right, I won't be disappointed. :p
Thor on 15/6/2010 at 23:26
Heh. As far as I know, Thi4f was a joke, that fans just didn't take too well, can't judge it just by that.
Building up expectations is a universal mistake, that comes from hope I guess (as I watched in House (and I'll just hope (yay!) it's not BSing about it) there is a whole section just for that emotion or whatever it is).
Anyway that's offtopic...
I don't care too much about the game atm., tho I'll probably be anxious to hear the responses, how good or bad it is.

What I want to see
- Intelligent AI, that works together and calls for help if they feel threatened enough, to improve the odds in their favor. If it gets bad enough, REAL soldiers should come, not just guards... no matter what area of the kingdom you're in. Also guards and armed citizens should form search parties to look for you if you piss them off enough. (example: breaking into a woman's room and getting caught stealing her jewelry, while she's in there, or killing or wounding someone.)
- "THIEF!! SOUND THE ALARMS!!", Sounding an alarm at the nearest guard post if you're caught, would be a good deterrent to stop players from running around as they please like they're playing Serious Sam. Planning ahead and keeping an eye out for escape routes, and the use of tactics would benefit the player.
- FULL STORY MULTI-PLAYER COOP with synchronized saving (like SS2), not only that by very polished off, easy to use, and bug free (unlike SS2 :tsktsk:). Maybe release it for Steam?
- Decent number of side quests, with some separate little stories that have nothing to do with the main plot.... or maybe a little bit to do with it.
- RPG elements with skill choices, maybe take advantage of the age of machines somehow? I'm not sure how it could be implemented... but I'd really love to see that. It would add a lot of replay value. This could solve the dagger verses sword argument. Choose which one you like, learn to use it well, and shut the hell up.
*Dagger could allow silent take downs with back stabs and the ability to use poison. The sword could allow more defense with a fencing skill and much higher physical damage.. This would give the player the freedom to choose between stealth or a strong offense and defense. This would definitely add replay value, by offering a complete change in your approach to the game with different tactics, each time you play through it.
**As you play the game, you should be able to find better and better weapons... not just being stuck with the same old thing you started with. Also perhaps the choice between two handed swords and one handed? Two handed = higher damage, longer reach, slower attack, slower parrying. One handed = lower damage, shorter reach, faster attack, faster parrying.
***It would be nice to see a game that rewarded a player for practicing a skill successfully, and not just instantly learning a skill by reading a book or being rewarded for body counts.
- Full inventory system and stashes where you can store your loot, and LOTS of stuff to steal, find, collect, and sell on the black market. Make the game a pack rat's wet dream!!! :ebil:
*Being able to upgrade everything you can wear or use, over time as you play through a game, really makes games a lot more fun. Every time you find something new its like christmas. :D
- The ability to dig up graves and steal from the dead!
- Day and night missions, like suggested above complete with full weather system.
- Larger levels to explore
- Several different kingdoms you can explore, and other locations, that you can travel between by actually walking outside... not just an instant load screen when you choose which area you want to travel to.
- Several different ways to lure guards and enemies away from a group. Flash light in their eyes with a mirror, whistle, make a strange animal noise, throw a rock, insult them when their buddies walk away... get them to follow you to a spot where you're both alone, so you can try to take them out without anyone seeing the scuffle. If you have the ability to choose to play as a male or female, this would be much easier to do as a female. Just show a little leg, and give them the come hither sign and disappear around a corner. lol Well... unless its a female guard... but it would be funny if there were sometimes lesbian guards. ROFL
- I love all those little things you experience, that show you that who ever made the game really put they're heart into it. Like finding candle lit books with full graphics that let you flip through them and read about the setting of the story, and the events that led up to the story. Finding people's personal diaries, notes, and letters, etc. Finding secret homes of wizards and witches, is always fun.

- More minigames designed for xbox controllers
Sounds good do me, as long as they spend just as much time on PC mouse & Keyboard controls, unlike a lot of games I've seen (Like Battlefield 2)

- Ability to play as 'Gretchen' (Garrett's hot thief sister)
Interesting idea

- Radar in HUD with objective markers
There should be no radar hud with enemy placement in Thief, but it should show how far the sounds you make travel on radar map. Objective markers? Kind of ruins the setting of the game. They don't have computers and GPS's in those times. I'd rather have an old fashioned map. :D

- Moss and water arrows as DLC
I hate acronyms, I never know what they mean.

- Spellcasting
Interesting idea, but I don't think its right for the Thief series. Enemies that use it against you, sounds good, but you're a thief that relies on traditional weapons and gadgets, not magic... which is why I like the game in the first place. This would ruin the game for me.

- Invisibility cloak
Interesting idea, but not until later in the game when you're up against much stronger and smarter opponents. Also, you should only be able to use it for 10 seconds at a time, then wait to use it again.

- Silenced sniper rifle
Please tell me you're kidding? This isn't Splinter Cell.

It isn't an unfocussed fantasy-RPG with "several kingdoms to explore" either. :weird:
