1. ...completely ignoring that dozens of people in the middle ages wearing daggers weren't assassins (which itself is an ex-post pseudo "job title") and that you cannot describe a sword as a defence weapon unless you include smashing every pursuer's head within the meaning of "defence"...
I guess your language doesn't have the expression, "The best defense is a good offense."
And I suppose you think that the
dozens of people who wore daggers in the Middle Ages wore them to protect themselves from attackers with
swords.

If you look at how Garrett is holding the sword when blocking you can see that it's really small. The blade is about 50cm.
Judging by the striking distance its as long as that of any guard. So there is nothing about it being exceptionally short. Its a common sword.

He has the sword because he's good at using it. He isn't good at using the dagger that's for sure.
Sure sounds like a stealthy guy to me.
So what is your weapon of choice against the cradle assylum staff if not the dagger? What more do you want than a 100% killing chance upon backstab? Something that does not require any amount of stealth and caution but something to swing around and stomp head on into combat slaying foes left and right?

Unless you are a thief in which case it would be "Best defense is run and escape" Or "Best defense is not being seen at all". And both times a sword not being much of a help.

Because flight is ALWAYS an option, amiright?

Well, If you constantly find yourself in situations where it isnt, then perhaps youre doing something wrong. That or the game designers have failed to make a game for a thief character.
And if you do end up discovered and cornered then a flash bomb is still the better option than to fight it out. Unless you are Conan the Barbaric Master Thief, of course.

Ew, how witty! Did you copy-paste that from somewhere?

You might as well justify a flamethrower being in the game with that. Because you know, you might not ALWAYS win the swordfight.
In case you did not just try to cover up your lack of a point with a hollow phrase, but merely got yourself confused in the heat of discussion, heres a little heads-up on my argument:
A thief strives for
a) stealth
b) agility
A sword does not help with either of the aspects.

Yes, short of the most contrived situations possible.
If some people find running away too hard or too unsatisfying, it just means thief 4 should provide additional tools (and AI) aimed at escape and avoiding pursuit.
(Not that I expect this to happen ... it's pretty safe to bet the sword will be coming back IMO.)

Plus, as I pointed out in the weapons thread, you
can implement somehow realistic dagger vs. sword techniques, but even the simple TDS stabbing worked as a last resort thing. Left aside all the other benefits.

No, probably as a tool. Or indeed as a weapon of last resort, considering that - unlike in fantasy worlds - not everyone carried a sword and high boots.

If Garrett had a prybar, would that cause objection (other than seeming to borrow from other, more well-known games)? He needs something to break through barriers or chop down undead, and any blade he has should be a utility first, and a weapon second. But then, if T4 follows the TDS route, Garrett won't need to preserve his flashbombs and fire arrows again.

What, you mean like a mandatory objective to kill a bunch of Bugbeasts?
