No ranting about how it should be exactly like Thief 1 or Thief 2, but what NEW things do you want. It doesn't matter how complex or important it would be to gameplay or story, so long as you aren't demanding an old feature.
I'll start:
- Some factions/members of the public should have telecoms, basic Radio and TV, aswell as personal radios so that guards can communicate with each other
- An easy to understand control system and engine, like the MGS4 engine with the fluidity and agility of the Assassins Creed engine
- I would love to be able to make new things as I play, say I find some old Mechanist junk, I could put together one of their robots, or something I came up with myself. If it is small enough and light enough you could put it in your inventory.
- A similiar system for making and using magic?

I'd like a freeroam ability between missions. Not like in TDS. I'm talking GTA IV style.
...well you did say it could be complex.
And I'd like more freedom of movement. Not quite as elaborate as Assassin's Creed (Garrett is getting on in his years, after all), but something which would allow for more complex jumps and landings. I'd also like a sprint ability for chases. Give one to the guards too, just for luck.

I was actually just playing GTA IV, thats where I got the Assassins idea from. I spawned in the apartment you get in Algonquin, and I walked around it until I got to a low wall which went all the way around the building. I thought 'If only I could climb onto it, and rather than fall to my death, sneak around and jump between ledges'.
What I wouldn't want to see is endless climbing, I would like an MGS4 style, where climbing puts either physical or mental stress on you, until you almost run out of steam when you have to find some solid ground to stand on. That forces you to go indoors and do some proper stealth rather than just climbing all the time.
The same stress system could be used for sprinting and jumping...
Sorry for making such a long post.

What new features I need with thief 4?
Let me think:
Lets start from the point that developers chosen the right natural way of things to improve the good recipe and not trying to make a new one. I mean by this that they should improve T1&T2 evolving it to a new game that it is based exactly on their structure.
After that I will add that thief4 will need improvements in the realism of the game (considering graphical improvements as a standard).
1. The AI should be vastly improved and made react more realistically to Garrett's actions. For example AI should react on left open doors, on arrows that fly close by, on turning the lights on-off e.t.c. Also it should be able to do everything Garrett does, climbing stairs-objects. Maybe they shouldn't dive in the water due to heavy armor. A pagan could do so. This will add to the gameplay.
2. If I have to think the previous game TDS then I must to say that thief 4 engine should allow vast environments for exploration meaning no loading zones. Thief is also about exploration so I could not imagine an engine that will limit you in loading zones and un-swimable water shrinking the exploration areas. The rope arrow is a tool that helps you in exploration and opening new ways to explore. So it should definitely added again in the game series. Only thing is that it should be more realistic. You can't shoot an arrow with a rope attached on a wooden beam and climb it. It has to be shot from a cannon to do that. Something like a small amount of explosive in the head of the arrow that will push the arrow further in the wooden surface would be better. This will make it a noisy tool thus changing the gameplay to a more realistic way.
3. I would like to see Garrett being able to hide prone under objects. Imagine Garrett hearing footsteps in the corridor and hides under the bed until the guard goes away or even hear a conversation later on.
4. Some new fractions would be good as long as they are well tied in the game. Necromancers maybe.
5. Lock picking should be made to work like in the real world. Maybe using sounds to pick a lock and not a visual. When pushing the pick in the right way you should hear the “correct” sound.
6. Limit to the things Garrett can carry will add to the realism.
7. The game map should be in real time so you have to find a good place to study it without interruptions.
8. Black jacking should be more difficult. Depending on what target wears, his/her physical condition and the placement of the hit there could be a different outcome.
9. Knocked out people could wake up some time. So Garrett must find a place to trap them or lock them up so they won't alert others.
10. Last one. A more realistic way to cause distraction. Dropping a coin on a guards path could make him stop and try to take it (perfect moment for BJing). Or throwing it far away to distract guards by noise. The noisemaker arrow is not so practical for me (carrying a whole arrow just for distraction purposes). On the other hand I don't know if Garrett wants to lose a coin just for distraction.:cheeky:
Sorry for the long post and crappy english.

A dialog system where the player can literally talk to the AI and they give meaningful responses.
Also, the ability to go into orbit.
R Soul on 25/7/2008 at 11:26
Sometimes you could go into orbit in Thief 1 when trying to climb ropes.

I want to see the characters equipment on him when playing in 3rd person mode, and in the game procedural animations should be used so that the player can actually attach weapons and loot anywhere on the characters suit and he can still reach it.
It'd be like a game of Buckaroo, only if you load him up too heavy, he starts to move slower and makes more noise, rather than kicking like a donkey.
Kin on 25/7/2008 at 13:43
I would rather 3rd person view removed completly from the game.
hexhunter on 25/7/2008 at 14:14
What if harder difficulties required that you earn 3rd person, like an unlock for your mechanical eye.
They may be able to get away with 1st person only, but only if Mirrors Edge is successful. None the less, I would like the choice, 3rd person and 1st person give very different play styles, it would double the replayability, and attract far more players...

Aua.
Oh, sorry, that's German for what you say when you've been hurt. First, TDS's engine had basically nothing to do with the level size. Second, a rope arrow with explosive head would be complete nonsense. Something that explodes doesn't accelerate in a direction towards the explosion. If you want to make this rope thing somehow believeable, you should offer a grappling hook. Or at least the arrow head should not be retrieveable. In fact you need a small rope to go with the arrow and a strong one knotted to it to pull it through a loop at the arrow head and finally climb this one. Then we come close to something creepy like realism. And there must be a thread about rope arrows from a couple of months ago.
...to make at least one serious post in this thread.
