Hullo chaps, just thought I'd force my opinion on you :D.
IMHO New Horizon and associated viewpoints are totally correct.
Thief is not a game. It is most definitely not a simulation.
It *is* a beautiful, beautiful system. Think of a living organism (yes i know this is a rather tired cliche). The thief system is the skeleton, the bones. (you are presented with a mansion full of guards and treasure - of course you know what to do). The flesh is the story and mythology created by looking glass (why have you come to this mansion in particular). The skin is your own imagination affecting gameplay, and your vision of the world beyond the missions.
The bones provide structure to the entire organism and underlie everything else. The story helps you form impressions about the broader world and the characters.
So if you fuck around with the system (people get back up after being ko'd, for example) you fuck everything up.
EDIT: i seem to have killed this thread :joke:

1. Disguises or other outfits would be fun. Already mentioned once, but I'm agreeing. Would be nice if they weren't a one-mission gimmick (unless one mission revolved around impersonating someone), but something you decide on each time you venture into the city, that sort of thing.
Yeah, I never like when things are provided for me though. So you should either have to go on a mini mission to find an extra set of clothes left in some room or locker room for disguise, or just be able to knock out a npc and take all of their clothes and wear them.
That way you could pick who to be disguised as. Even a woman. lol
Or a guard. Then you start walking a beat that leads you to your destintion and Benny shows up and starts talking to you. XD
Benny: "New on the force eh?"
Garrett: "Uh.. yeah. Yeah I just joined up."
Benny: "Well, Watch out for these taffers hiding in the shadows. They just black jack you and steal everything these days. Even your taffin clothes!"
Garret: "Wow, well I'll have to be careful then..."

This kind of dialogue is very funny and good. I imagine Stephen Russell saying those lines:laff:
At the end of the dialogue i imagined instinctively a blackjack "thumb" sound and Benny lying on the floor
Acorn on 2/9/2008 at 11:47
But first Benny talks about this taffer Garrett. He goes on about how he has chased the thief down a time or two and waves his sword about in mock battle illustrating his skillful victories over the master thief--Garrett pockets Benny's money pouch and has to step back or accidentally be injured by the wild sword sweeps in Benny's display of false competency.
Benny: Thats why you don't have to worry about that thief Garrett, not while you have Old Benny around!"

No, infact, I bet no one from Eidos Montreal even knows what TTLG is. Unless of course, there's an old team member from LGS at Eidos Montreal. Right?
I suppose someone could remedy this by sending someone from Eidos Montreal an e-mail about this very thread.
Yes , we just need the right someone.
I don't understand , how can they seriously consider making a new thief game without knowing anything about the people who still play them , and their opinions ?
Do they even know about fan missions ? Or have they ever played some of the best ones ?
I found the ttlg forums while searching for FMs (and walkthrough for those ) .

Well, Eidos knows about TTLG, but do they care? I mean, after the non-stop rage over TDS and DX:IW, do they want to care what we think, or will they write us off and make another installment in an attempt to appeal to a broader audience ($$)? With the trilogy completed, they may just reinvent the wheel. Of course, I hope they'll listen to what we considered a failure and what we considered a success.

The true fans know the devs didn't remove the rope arrows and make the water unswimmable, but the tools they were given didn't allow for them, much to their frustration and disappointment. They were left no choice but to work with what they had. So much time was lost trying to get the rope arrows and water to work, that it hurt overall development time. With the continued anger of the ignorant, and the lasting disappointment of the majority, I wouldn't be surprised if the fans were written off. I just hope Eidos-Montreal doesn't continue to make it more and more mainstream.

Perhaps the developers would be disheartened at extensive criticism, but I doubt that the publisher would take it personally. Surely to some extent, the dislike here for both TDS and DX:IW was mirrored generally with their lower sales? If that's the case then it's possibly a reason for the publisher to pay attention. The point of making a sequel is to assure some sales through familiarity, so appealing to veterans is one of the priorities, but that goes wrong when they try to make the IP "NEW™, EXCITING™, NEXT-GEN™, SO MUCH FUN YOUR SPLEEN WILL EXPLODE™".
Also, it seems like TTLG is the broader audience in terms of demographics, but not neccessarily the optimal one. But yeah, I get what you mean.
P.s - As a male in the 18-25 age range I apologise on behalf of my fellow demographians for the incessant shooty-bang-bling littering the market.

Yeah. No kidding. It seems like the boatloads of games that publishers release every year are all of the same "shoot-em-to-bits-but-put-in-one-thing-that's different-so-that-you-can-tell-it-apart-from-the-others" type. The best thing I can appreciate from Thief is that you are not given the power to kill hundreds of people in the same day. Assassin's Creed? Nice game, but Altair can depopulate Jerusalem in less than a half-hour. Not only that, but the AI in there is more like AR. Anyway, I digress...
I doubt that Eidos-Montreal will leave Thief alone when they see THIS many fans dedicated to the series. That's just too much money to pass up. So if the DO decide to make Thief IV, they should...*long post alert*
...let the player look through keyholes.
...include equipment upgrades (like having better tools/weapons availible for purchase, or having them given over the course of the game. I'm not talking about granting new abilities like being able to see glyphs or blow up rust mites. I'm talking about being able to buy a crossbow for example. Or a blacked-out dagger--anything so that you're not stuck with the same equipment for the whole game).
...bring back edible food (like in TMA where you had 1/4 chance of regaining one health bar).
...bring back the rope arrow (no vine arrows, 'cause Viki is dead).
...bring back the ability to pick-pocket arrows from bowmen guards.
...put the locks on or under the door handle (I have never seen a door with its lock located dead center, and besides, it looks unusual).
...remove the lockpicking minigame (eliminate ALL forms of visual aid--let us use our ears ONLY).
...replace the blackjack that was used in TDS because it looks like...um...yeah...you know...a bumpy dildo
...increase the diversity of tools, potions, and equipment.
...bring back the ability for broadheads to create distractions.
...allow the player to be swim.
...make prettier loot.
...make it so that I don't have to fence...um...money.
...bring back the original frob (in TDP and TMA, the textures of the objects actually brightened, whereas in TDS, I think an overlay was used with no change in the texture's brightness)
...remove the loot glint (this is a delicate issue because in TDP and TMA, it was easy to confuse junk for loot while in TDS, it was too obvious what (and where) was loot--my idea is to simply make loot look like...loot)
...make the player BUY the compass. Actually, make the player buy the MAPS and (don't kill me, please) LIGHT GEM, too (it's just a a mineral that reflects light, right?). By forcing us to buy things we take for granted, we will be encouraged to steal more or save up more.
...fix the economy (two flashbombs have the same value as...the Bloodline Opal?).
...let me put stuff down without being forced to either drop it on the floor or throw it across the room (my suggestion for this is to implement a system where you press and hold the right mouse button to pick up and hold an object, and by moving the mouse around, the object will also move. This allows you to set the junk down. If you want to let go of the object, just let go of the right mouse button. If you want to throw it, just press the left mouse button while you're holding the object. We can apply a similiar system to doors to allow the player to open and close doors gently instead of busting 'em open and slamming them shut all the time).
...improve the violence--this means doing things like having slash marks on people you slashed and arrows getting stuck in the poor saps you shot (come on, admit it--there are days when you went on a murderous rampage throughout the City "just to see what happens", right?).
...implement realistic locational damage
...make people look different (I saw Marla Madison friggin' EVERYWHERE).
Whew. What an essay. Forgive me, it has been four years since I last posted here, and I am quite excited. I was member "Cobra189", but during my long inactive state, I...um...forgot my password, so I was forced to create a new account. I discovered that no matter how long I stopped playing Thief, I always came back to it eventually.
