What (or who) does Garrett care about ... apart from money? - by chagnampra

Anyway, I meant redundant in terms of character development. The quick sketch of his background you get in the opening of the first game is enough for me. It'd have to be a pretty damn good yarn to add anything we couldn't fill in ourselves.
But then I also argue that they should bring in a new protagonist becasuse I don't see any way they could make him go back to stealing fat noblemen's priceless trinkets without some appalling retcon. I'm fine with a Thief without Garrett as long as it's faithful to the gameplay and mood of the original.
I don't understand where you got this idea so deeply engraved in your head that Garrett has stopped being a thief? 'Cause I haven't heard of it? Is there some official expansion pack that I and many others are utterly unaware of? He hasn't got any other means of making a living, does he? Should he just die of starvation then?

I watched the end of Thief 3. He'll survive the way the other Keepers used to, I guess. Which could very well be stealing, we never do get to know that. But it's not the main thing he is any more.

Mabe you could comment on how to give the character even more depth, with an even greater emotional dimension.
Or is it essential to keep Garrett as a solitary, mistrustful, slightly cynical character? To me, Garrett must remain highly detached, somewhat cynical you may say - but I really find him just rational.
He's not mistrustful I think; I believe it's quite the opposite; as other have said he helps a bit too much to be a complete bastard but after all he does that everyday to survive so it could just deliver the help.
I like this rational Garrett. I also like House BTW. Given that, he'll have to change a bit over time. One can be rational as he wants but some things are just irrational by nature.
Now, the question is, do we have the chance to know about that? I have known Garret for little time after all; the time frame involved in TDP and TMA does not seem to be adeguate to support dramatic changes in his personality. If he's going to change, it'll surely be a slow, gradual process, there is enough material to go to Thief8 or so.

I don't think the spell did that exactly. Vicky says: 'the earth keeps your promise for you'. I guess that if Garrett (or Vicky) would betray the other one, that 'the earth' (but who/ what?) would punish them.
By extending the notions I read in other threads about glyphs and magic in Thief's world I see the possibility the Earth will force a line of thinking (possibly unconscious) working towards the goal with no punishment involved.

Forgive me, but a love interest for Garrett would be a bit cheesy. Besides, it's not like he's at home a lot at night anyway. ;)
Mission: Garrett has been dating Bennie's sister. She is home and has sent a message for you to meet her in her rooms, but Bennie is home too.. with some friends, having been fired off of their last job because of you. They are drinking and playing stone or coin in the front room. Make your way into the house and up to your girlfriend's room without alerting the guards. Steal bennie's sword before you leave.

I totally agree. If the game developers want to put a character in Thief4 whom Garrett cares about, how about a son or daughter that he has had since Thief: Deadly Shadows? Maybe a son who has rebelled against his father and joined the Hammers?

Eh, every time someone says that Garrett and Victoria might have been 'involved' half the people around here seem to think that it's some sort of romantic fantasy projection. :erg:
For me anyway, this is not the case. I don't get warm fuzzy feelings thinking about Garrett and Victoria hooking up. I mean, she tore out his eye. Talk about a dysfunctional relationship. :tsktsk:
However, there are parts in the games that say (to me at least), that maybe there was something going there. Obviously, this is all speculation, I could be wildly off base.
It's not just the bit in Soulforge either, honestly I found that to be over the top, character-wise. Watching some of the bits in TDP got me wondering too. Like how during the pre-mission briefing for 'The Sword' Vicktoria's face stays on screen throughout. Or after that mission Vicktoria seems to know where (at least one of) Garrett's hide out(s) is. Or the way he says "Yes" in that scene.
I also think that those of you who think that Garrett is, well a sociopath it sounds like, are guilty of the same sort of generalizations as those who would paint him as a softie.
For instance, in TMA when the Keepers come to ask Garrett to come and hear them out, he tells them to get lost...
Until Artemus(?), asks Garrett "Is there no friendship left between us?", and then, however grudgingly, he does go with them. A little thing, but I think it shows that Garrett isn't all kleptomania and self interest.
Ooof. Anyway, I don't want to get anybodies panties in a twist, this is all perspective and opinion. I just think that a Garrett that is only interested in himself is as boring as one who's some kind of 'soft touch' beneath a snarky exterior.
P.S. As far as the blood oath thing in TMA went, I always figured that it was some kind of geas. So, I figured that if Garrett broke his word it, would... kill him, seriously inconvenience him in some other way, something.

That is the absolute worst idea I've ever heard on these forums. Did you think about it at all before saying that out loud?
