What (or who) does Garrett care about ... apart from money? - by chagnampra

However, there are parts in the games that say (to me at least), that maybe there was something going there. Obviously, this is all speculation, I could be wildly off base.
It's not just the bit in Soulforge either, honestly I found that to be over the top, character-wise. Watching some of the bits in TDP got me wondering too. Like how during the pre-mission briefing for 'The Sword' Vicktoria's face stays on screen throughout. Or after that mission Vicktoria seems to know where (at least one of) Garrett's hide out(s) is. Or the way he says "Yes" in that scene.
This is the very definition of fantasy projection. Her face is on the screen because it is a "Garrett is working for a hot chick" moment, but that is all. The
way he says "Yes"? Come on.

When will the fact that she's a wood nymph, with charisma and charm and looks in order to seduce or disarm men by her very nature, ever be considered? Feminine wiles to trick the manfool? Not to mention the blood oath she swears the earth will hold them to? Mutual respect and a necessary working relationship lasting months before the end-game? A suicide mission that astonishes Garrett as he watches her kick ass out of her element, taking five direct hits from cannonballs before exploding into half an ecosystem?
But don't forget this line:
G: "Don't wait up. I'll be working late."

That was so funny :joke:

It's been said before, but Garrett is far from stupid. He's keeper trained and educated and was one of their brightest and best.
It would be odd if he didn't have some self reflection about his own role.

Here's an idea: why not use the little girl from the end of Thief 3 as a connection? She could be a junior taffer, get a little guidance from Garrett but generally be on her own - until she bites off more than she can chew one day and gets caught. Then someone could be using her to try and get to Garrett - either to finally put an end to his 'career' or to use him as a means to an end - Blackmail. That could form the first part of a storyline - being forced to help a purpose that may be entirely against his conscience. The second part then could be some form of revenge plot, or setting things straight - contain the damage, right some wrongs and eventually putting Mr Blackmailer out of his misery.
I could cope with this as a part of Thief4. Although personally I think the main story ought to go in the direction of what faction steps in to fill the void left by the keepers. I think it ought to be the mages (digging around in uncovered keeper secrets) and the city hierarchy trying to restore order to chaos.
Love interest? No thank you. But handing the cloak and dagger over to the girl by the end of the game, I could swallow.
As far as the my 2 cents on the discussion about the progression of Garrett's character through the series, see jtr7's posts. I won't bother to repeat what has already been well said, and I completely agree with.

Fantasy projection says to me that someone is projecting their personal preferences or emotions onto someone or something else. This is not what I'm doing. If Word of God were to come down tomorrow and state that nothing was going on between Garrett and Victoria, I won't be disappointed, or heartbroken, or anything but
wrong. (Which is one of my less favorite things to be, but hey it happens.)
Anyway, I'm not trying to offer these examples as incontrovertible proof. They are just some things that (on replay) made me wonder. Maybe my knowledge of TMA is tainting my perception of the first game. Maybe I'm just reading way too much into it. (Again, it happens. :p)
jtr7, I think again you make some good points about Vicktoria, and her nature. Physical charm, aided by supernatural charm would help explain why a number of men in the Thief world were entranced by her; Bafford and Ramirez(? maybe, can't recall for certain on him).
