I have been tearing my hair out with trying to get Thief Gold and Thief 2 to run on my XP system....It used to run sans movies but now all I get when I go to load up a mission is an error Faulting application thief2.exe, version 1.9.0.0, faulting module thief2.exe, version 1.9.0.0. fault address 0x0015874a.
I know it is the crap video codec related and none of the FAQ fixes work it is probably due to some windows XP update...
But anyway what OS do most of you use to run the older Thiefs????

I believe most of us are using XP, some have got it running on Vista.
I had to do most of the fixes in the FAQ, including fixes on other sites that the FAQ lead me to. I didn't have to deal with any of the Graphics Card issues, though.
List your system specifications and, if you wouldn't mind, exactly which fixes you tried in the FAQ.

CPU: Athlon X2 4200+
Graphics: 7900GT running 93.71 drivers
RAM: 2Gb
Motherboard: Asus A8N-E
OS: XP Home
I have tried all three movie fixes...Installed the newer Indeo codecs...and forced it to run on one processor...The exact same error happens for Thief Gold and Thief 2...I can get to the main loading screen, get to the loadout screen then when I go to load a mission it freezes..

if you're definite that it's to do with the video codec'c, there's an attempted fix you can try . . . if you're running XP SP2, you can check out what codecs you've got installed and what not . . .
to view codecs installed into windows: Rclick "Start" > Explore, then go to Tools > Folder Options > View and select Show Hidden Files and Folders. Next, Rclick "Start" > Search... in the 'Search for files or folders named:' enter *.ax and in the 'Look in:' box, select 'My Computer' and click search. It will return a list of all the audio and video codecs installed to the computer.
next, select a codec and rename it to something like *.ax~ or whatever you can remember (write the extension down if need be), fire up the game and see how it runs. Specifically target the video codecs, but from my prior experience with other programs, audio codecs can be an issue to. Usually, it's one codec that's conflicting with another as it's trying to "steal the limelight" and run even though it's not called for. If disabling a codec doesn't fix the issue, make sure to rename it back to *.ax so WIN will again recognize it. If need be, you can even disable a few at a time.
It's worth a shot, hope it helps

In response to the original question, I use 98 for every game that will run under it, and XP only when I have to. It's a dual-boot setup.
I won't even try to use Vista unless I'm forced to. Like, say, if BioShock only runs under Vista.

Hello Taffer's, this is my very first post even though I've been a member for well over a year(work keeps me too busy). Last week I built a new computer with Nvidia 8800 GTX vid card and AMD 3.0Ghz dual core. Before I was running XP with dual 7800 GTX's in Sli mode and a single core AMD Athlon. I could get Thief DP to install but it would always crash when trying to run, I know this was a problem with video drivers because I was trying to get it to display on a Dell 24" widescreen monitor. Thief 2 and Deadly Shadows would play fine. Now with Vista I Installed and played all 3 versions(for @ 1hr each), the only hack I had to do was the imagecfg fix as stated in the technical FAQ's(MultiProcessor Issue). They all display less than the monitor's default 1920 X 1200 resolution, with the black bars which is expected. The last thing I need to do is use widescreengamingforum.com's hack to display Deadly shadows at full screen. The only other game not working is Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood. It will not even attempt to install. Seems to be a known issue on Ubisoft's forum.

I have Thief2 running on Vista with an 8800 (158.45 drivers). I did all the uniprocessor hacks - I also installed dromed (Komag version) and it seems OK as well.
I'm currently running at 640x480 so that the display-mode switch when bringing up map/objectives is gone - the menu screens all run at 640x480 (hence no need for mode switch).
I also set Thief2.exe to disable desktop composition.
My biggest gripe is the paletted-texture weirdness that's been commented on a lot in other threads. The worst side-effect is that increasing Thief2 gamma doesn't brighten dark areas as it should (and it looks yucky). I think some taffer like Benny is in charge of writing video drivers. Looks like putting an FX5200 in my machine for full Thief2 enjoyment.
Hardware sound: I couldn't select this in the Thief2 options. Obviously I couldn't enable EAX either. Vista does not expose HW functionality via DirectSound. :nono: I downloaded Alchemy from the Creative website and followed it's instructions (dsound.dll/dsound.ini to the thief2 folder). I was then able to enable HW sound and EAX. Praise the Builder! Just wish the Builder would bless us with the same type of shim for the video card palette nonsense.

You forgot Windows 2000, so I can't vote.

Why is 3.11 there? Is it possible to run Thief on it at all? :weird:
