FO3 is certainly better than NV
Nein. Here's something that I prepared earlier.

New Vegas by a country mile. Some exceptions withstanding, FO3's Capital Wasteland is populated by 2D cartoon characters and everything is governed by blatantly black and white morality. The majority of the time there is next no middle-ground in Fallout 3, you're either a total saint or a moustache-twirling villain. Hmmm, should I blow up Megaton or not? HARD CHOICE, EH?
NV on the other hand feels like it's populated by realish people, with their own sets of opinions and politics. Nothing is completely black and white either. Contrast FO3's separatist sect of the Brotherhood of Steel with the NCR. FO3's BoS are saintly knights, crusading to protect the people of the Capital Wasteland against the East's unknown strain of green Supermutants that seem unstoppable - that's all there is to them, nothing more. NV's NCR model themselves after the democratic ways of the old USA, have all of the flaws too. Sure they're idealistic as a whole, but like current American politics there is some corruption, agendas influenced "Big Money"/Big Industry (i.e. the Brahmin barons). For example, the quest "Return to Sender" and the motivations of the character at the roots of it. The NCR's intentions of bringing stability to the Mojave Wasteland and protecting them from Caesar's Legion are noble, but their methods are harsh, by means of steam-rolling through and taking control of the entire area and imposing NCR law upon everyone.
In my own playthrough I'm trying to play as a good two-shoes but am torn between two factions to back in their bid for control of the area. Both seem to be the lesser of evils and they both give compelling arguments of why they should have power, but what leaves me stumped what they may do once they're in control. Until I shed more light on this issue and respective faction's agendas, my game has more or less ground to halt.

Thirith, what the heck is wrong with the controls?
At least the mouse controls are floaty and imprecise. It may play better with a gamepad.
gunsmoke on 17/1/2011 at 12:37
There is an .ini tweak to fix the mouse smoothing. Night and day difference. Shame you missed that one.

Thanks, I did miss that one. Will implement the .ini tweak before I play on in the game.

I'm downloadstalling New Vegas now. The only thing that gives me pause about playing that first is the inevitable avalanche of DLC and game-wonderfulling mods. (I understand there's already a pile of mods out there that greaten up the game, and I will be using 'em!)

There are a lot more out there for FO3. I'm particularly missing the drugs mod I had, which added tonnes of new drugs to the game with varying effects and visuals and also let you open and smoke packs/cartons of cigarettes for bonus charisma - because smoking makes you more cool.

Ah yes, mods. The reason I haven't started playing NV yet. The lists of mods that do good things are absolutely massive, and I just can't be arsed to install and get them to work, as it took me about 8 million hours in Oblivion. And of course I'm not strong enough to ignore the mods, because of the wonderful things they promise.
Here's a list by a fellow who is very passionate about this stuff though. He also seems to care greatly for aesthetics and compatibility, so no overlapping overhauls or sex mods or silly guns and whatnot. (

(No idea why he's banned. The list's last update was 11 jan)

Be sure to get (

And the greatly expanded radio tunes selection one. The music gets REALLY old (pun intended) fast, since within 20-30 mins you'll be hearing the same tunes again. Couple of good ones yes, but still repeating.
There's only one DLC for NV so far, and that's not available for PC yet. Damn Microsoft getting timed exclusivity to everything.
The "all factions being shades of grey rather than black or white" mentioned a few posts up was the thing I loved most about NV besides the gameplay. Shame Mr House disliked the brotherhood of steel so much though. Would have sided with him otherwise on my playthrough of the game.

I think AP is the new DX as far as "when someone mentions it you have to play it again." I fired up a game for the first time since the month it came out and now I'm sucked back in. Damn it.
Re: the grey as opposed to black/white options in NV, that's true for the most part, but there's still one option that is unquestionably evil and one that is, well, not so much "the least evil" but the most satisfying.
