What RPG to play... choice of five. - by Digital Nightfall

I mostly just use mods that fix bugs or annoyances; e.g. I have a PC, so I installed a mod to fix the UI, I hate off-centred third-person, so I installed a mod to fix the camera, I felt that enemies gib a bit too often, so I installed a mod to reduce the chance. Nothing gameplay altering, just things that make the game play a little better for me. I might also install graphical mods to make the game look better, so long as they again don't change the gameplay.

In FO3, I learned after my first character to NOT take any of the Perks that increase how quickly you level up. FO3 is far more generous with XP than the original Fallouts.

Especially if you play on Very Hard. But, either way, there's plenty of XP, and a level cap, so picking something that gives you more XP, or a free level, is just a waste of a perk. The one that gives you more skill points upon reading a skill book is definitely worth it, though.

I'm playing New Vegas without any mods whatsoever, and it's been a good run so far. Some leftover muscle memory issues from my time with FO3's FWE mod keep getting in the way (why can't I sprint? oh yeah) but that's my own damn fault. ;)

I'm only playing with two mods anyway-- one that shrinks the UI text down to PC size, and one that prevents the DLC quests from immediately popping up when you start the game.
Hey ZB, can you link me to that DLC quests one? I have one for Op Anchorage, but it'd be nice if I could get the others.

The best mods for the Bethesda games, at least for me, are the ones that slow skill progression down. That said, it takes a hell of a long time to reach level 30 in the new Fallout games, so I tend to only use them in Oblivion, where cleaning out a dungeon was often enough to completely bypass entire lists of levelled creatures and loot.
That DLC quests mod sounds nice though, if anyone has something similar for TES3/4 I'd love to check it out.

Totally. Glad you were smart enough to avoid that one. So many people fall for it and end up ruining the pacing of the leveling.

FWIW, the exp increasing perks were just as worthless in original Fallout and Fallout 2.
And Arcanum. But in Arcanum it was a background at least, so you could just go "eh, nothing else interests me, I'll take this one".

Myself included in the "idiots that picked the quicker leveling perks". I realised later on, far too late. Grr. So many better perks I could have picked.
