Ok, why did the miners in the Pagan mine tunnel (at the start of the mission) attack me on sight?
I recall not being harmed by the two thugs outside the church, so why are innocent peasant miners attacking me?! I would think that competition for loot AKA fellow thugs would have attacked me lest they fear I steal their share of treasure, but noooo...

In the missions proper, everything will attack you. The city is a diffeent story altogether. As for motivation, you're a thief and they have silver.

The bigger question involving those miners is -
How did they get lost?
I mean, there's only two ways to get to where they were. Through the Pagan compound (which they didn't do, since they didn't even know there were Pagans down there) or down the well like Garrett, in which case the exit is right there.

You weren't holding a weapon were you? (Or does that only count in the first two Thief's?):erg:

I can't figure out how they're lost either - they're standing 4 feet away from where Garrett dropped down from the top of the well.
Kinda like how the Kurshock is a 'lost race'...whose habitat is at the end of a sewer tunnel with a ladder leading down from the main street in the Docks area. Hidden for centuries until Garrett in all his genius decides to climb down the ladder. Brilliant.

The Kurshok are sealed in and Garrett only got through via a Keeper glyph.

You'd think the city would've uncovered them in their excavating for land unless we didn't see Garrett walk those 20 miles in.

Nowhere does it imply that the area at which you select the mission has to be within a few feet of where the mission starts. Garrett could have made his way through a lot of sewer tunnels or underground caves to get to where the missions start. It would just have been "hidden" from the player because nothing interesting happens on his way to the start of the mission.

Ah, as Fran Walsh (I think) from the Lord of the Rings films said "We prefer to think of it as just untold rather than missed out...)
Also, they would attack you because they have to be wary of any pagans. A guy in a hood with a weapon looks pretty much like a pagan in the dark.
Also, if Garrett has his wonderful mechanical eye glowing all the time, how comes it the guards never notice the faint green light?

The same reason no one sees Sam Fisher's green lights...
