That one wasn't cut, it evolved into the creatures we meet in Escape!
[citation needed], I know, but I am not sure what the source is on that.

I believe you. I can see it. I can't quite tell, is it just an early texture? I saw another pattern on its face, and didn't register its nostrils, which would've tipped me off. No tail visible, looks thinner though its not, can't see if a sword is in its right hand, and it appears to have something in its left held horizontally. A club? A different kind of blade?
Thanks, Digi!

Why did you link to those sites? I don't see the connection.

It's in every post ro_magnum_44 makes, almost like a signature, though it's really spam. Google "ro_magnum_44".
ManicMan on 14/3/2009 at 13:04
thing is, it's not even Borderlining on Spamming, it's plain and simple spamming.. the same as if i stuck a Google Adbar in my posts.. something which would (or atlest should) get me two warnings and then a ban...
speaking back on the topic, it reminds of of something i found in the T2 res files the other day, nothing new but what appears to be the texture for the skin of a Spider-demon. Now, there is Concept art on the circle showing aa image of a Spider-demon creature that was cut.. doesn't look the same though.. but did they get as far as skinning? Someone really need to see if Edios wanna open up there vault to see if we can get some removed objects and monster models sometime.. sometimes the companys do that.. not alot though...

Interesting finds, jtr7!:o
Looks to me to be a like it could possibly be an early form of a ratman?
jtr7 on 14/3/2009 at 23:18
Yeah, Digi tipped me off. Of course, "ratman" is a misnomer, since apes don't have tails, but at least the devs unofficially called them "Monkeys" in the gamefiles, before settling on "Apebeast." The texture looks like a placeholder, since it's not very human or primate-looking...or rodent, for that matter.:D

Yes, but rats do, so ratman could be appropiate...
Are we talking about TDP or TMA, because the beasties in Thief 1 have always reminded me of rats - rat personality "fitting" the evil snickering monsters better than apes.
While the beast in TMA used the same soundfiles, they at least looked clearly like apes (gorillas).
(Whatever the case, my point is, your sentence - the quoted bit- doesn't make sense. I think I know what you meant, but it came out garbled ;)
Seeing the texture of this spider-man-beast thingie I'm quite happy it wasn't included. I'm still in shock from when I encountered THAT other thing in the blooper mission. Only the cradle comes close in describing my horror.

The "ratmen" in TDP/Gold are apebeasts with tails, a mistake fixed in TMA, and a perpetual source of confusion. The devs called them apebeasts, and like I said, the term "monkey" is used in the gamefiles. "Monkeymen" would've been more appropriate. My early memories of the TDP apebeasts included mouse ears, and I know that's my personal confusion, 'cause I too thought they were ratlike thanks to that crazy tail. The tail is the problem. If the faces had been like snouts, and the noses pointy, instead of wide noses with large nostrils, I'd probably wonder what the devs were smoking.
I took the texture file labeled "monkeyg.gif" and mirrored the image:

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9271/monkeyg.pngIn fact, I think the TDS Rat Beasts came about from us fans calling the apebeasts "ratmen" all the time.:sly:
The TDP/Gold voice sound files are labeled beginning with "ab1-" and "ab2-".
The sound folders are labeled "Ape1" and "Ape2".
Their footstep sounds are labeled "FT_APE1" and "FT_APE2".
The schema files are labeled "APE1" and "APE2"
The first line in the APE1 schema is "//APEBEAST1 -Dan Thron".
The first line in the APE2 schema is "//APEBEAST2 -Joffrey Spaulding".
The lines in the FEET schema for them say "(CreatureType Apparition
Ape Burrick Crayman Frog)".
The speech archetypes are "voice vapes", "voice vape1", and "voice vape2".
They are called "ApeBeast" in DromEd.
And one last subtle detail, up for debate: They have an idle motion of scratching under their arms, like a monkey parody.:laff:

They had a lot of trouble with several animations, and so some things were dropped that just weren't working, like the sweels and cobra- or snakebeasts. If it were possible to meld the upper body animations of a Crayman with the animations of the huge Spider Beasts, they'd have something that fit the established universe. Here's a kind of spider that made it into a promo video, but it was really animated weird. It was only lifting it's legs up and down, mechnically, but not doing anything else, not going anywhere:
