Great stuff. That's about the only reference I know of (apart from possibly some old forum dev discussions) where The City is referred to as a city-state.
And though Emil wrote in his capacity as an associate of The Adrenaline Vault (complete with email addy), he still looks and feels enough like a horse that I'd trust its straight words for canon.
Man, that was an awkward simile.
In other, slightly more prosaic words, new info found there like the fungus bombing arrows should be taken advantage of IMO. =)

Of course, after that I found the term "fungus" in the sound schemas. I've never searched for the term in the Thief files before, nor looked much at the FEET schemas.:p

Athletes' foot fungus? Tee hee! :o
FUNGUS.WAV is unrelated.
Particles used in the animation of a detonating moss arrow:
fungball
fungb2
From Properties, "Prox\Fungus = Fungus".
There, got that outta my system (well, copied and pasted from my system).

An FM author should edit the moss arrow to shoot out mushrooms rather than moss. :D

Ooo. Take the Bafford archer from the Blooper Reel that shoots apples and switch the apples out with 'shrooms!:D

That's the sewer spider texture.

They're just moss arrows by a different name?

No, those are light mushroom models.
Fungball is the shapeless 'fragile' (pickable) light mushrooms, and
fungb2 is the mushroom-shaped 'durable' light mushrooms.
It's interesting how Emil wrote about how they originally planned to have multiplayer support in TDP, plus that they always considered releasing DromEd. The whole thing reminds me bit of that TDP preview I once read in a booklet from another Eidos game.

Clearly the albino spider texture was originally meant to be humanoid, but at least they found another creepy use for it. :ebil:
It was asked before, but I had found an interview explaining that "6D" world meant up/down, left/right, forward/back.
ManicMan on 15/3/2009 at 14:32
THAT'S A SEWER SPIDER!?!?!
i though the spider textures were spiderg.GIF and spiderr.GIF which are based on it but don't have as much 'human' like details and hands... though i must admit, i don't normally see them small sewer spiders close enought to see if it is that file...
JTR seams right with the idea that maybe they just re-used the texture because it looks like alot of the detail is lost and not used..
jtr7 on 15/3/2009 at 20:47
To engrain the truth in my mind, I looked in DromEd, and yep, that's the texture used. A selected portion of it, anyway.
Thanks for the corrections, NV! The fungball/fungb2 I found were mingled with a compiled list of mostly particles.:tsktsk:
ManicMan on 15/3/2009 at 21:33
so.. they only used bit of it.. so it's probebly safe to say, it was meant for something else first right?

The "ratmen" in TDP/Gold are apebeasts with tails, a mistake fixed in TMA, and a perpetual source of confusion. The devs called them apebeasts, and like I said, the term "monkey" is used in the gamefiles. "Monkeymen" would've been more appropriate. My early memories of the TDP apebeasts included mouse ears, and I know that's my personal confusion, 'cause I too thought they were ratlike thanks to that crazy tail. The tail is the problem. If the faces had been like snouts, and the noses pointy, instead of wide noses with large nostrils, I'd probably wonder what the devs were smoking.
I took the texture file labeled "monkeyg.gif" and mirrored the image:
In fact, I think the TDS Rat Beasts came about from us fans calling the apebeasts "ratmen" all the time.
The TDP/Gold voice sound files are labeled beginning with "ab1-" and "ab2-".
The sound folders are labeled "Ape1" and "Ape2".
Their footstep sounds are labeled "FT_APE1" and "FT_APE2".
The schema files are labeled "APE1" and "APE2"
The first line in the APE1 schema is "//APEBEAST1 -Dan Thron".
The first line in the APE2 schema is "//APEBEAST2 -Joffrey Spaulding".
The lines in the FEET schema for them say "(CreatureType Apparition Ape Burrick Crayman Frog)".
The speech archetypes are "voice vapes", "voice vape1", and "voice vape2".
They are called "ApeBeast" in DromEd.
And one last subtle detail, up for debate: They have an idle motion of scratching under their arms, like a monkey parody.
Fascinating. Based on this information, it seems to me that the devs really made an ape beast in TDP (and as you said, they "fixed" that for the T2 equivalents, as they actually DO look like ape beasts) but for some odd reason decided to call them ratman within the storyline and give them tales.:weird: Or actually, they were more geared toward monkeys than apes, but somehow the term "ratman" came into use. Just seems all really weird, funny that I never really thought deeply about this when playing TDP.:o

Yes, and we already know that Thief: Gold has some left over assets for multiplayer. And as we also already know, thief 2 had enough multiplayer code in it which has allowed there to be a T2 multiplayer! :cheeky:

I was about to comment on that, thanks for this.:) I guess they are referring to the dimensions of a cube in dromed? (that is, in a cubed jorge room, you look up/ down, left /right, and move forward and backward.)
