They have to move into it. So, if they don't move right into the oil, (throwing it at their feet doesn't work) they won't slip. Running just makes them slip further, usually off ledges or into walls...Or if you're feeling particularly nasty, a flaming oil puddle...
Set up one oil patch in front of their path, set another up out of contact distance (the second patch can't be touching the first) and light up the second with a fire arrow. Get a few guards to come running after you...
For good fun, put it near stairs as well.
And if you really hate a guard, those security devices in the museum. Make a puddle nearby...or set a mine up in front of a puddle.

Ah, the Keeper Compound (Of Brethren and Betrayers, I think its called) was fun, all those keeper elders serching for the wands then slipping on some convieniently placed oil off their podium... Those were the days!:laff:
Wieldstrom was funny, the guards do look funny.

Could be. It's a long time since I played it, so I don't remember much in the way of details. IIRC one of the loot pieces I had missed was in the area with the pendulums near the beginning of the level, and the other was in a room with a hammerite priest, I think.

T-Smith means the coins on the ledge in the central room you reach via the elevator.
You can't get that
first -the coins- because you aren't there yet. Also you did not mention the chest of loot as you exit the vents into the pendulum area. :)

Ditto. Absolutely amazing level design and atmosphere. I rather liked the level, where you rowed to the big house on the hill, from the Docks. I forget what that one's called.
