My opinion after playing the Thief II demo (my invitation into Thiefdom):
"What tha...? Holy-! SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! SWEET, SWEET SWEET SWEET!"
Of course, that was after I learned how to use my blackjack properly. Before then, I was just clubbing people to death cuz I thought it was funny.

My first experience with Thief was a Thief 2 demo that came packaged with a magazine - during the demo the scene with the arguing archers from Life Of The Party played out and I knew that I was playing something special.
I loved the pace after playing FPS games like Half Life the same year I played Thief for the first time.. I knew the look was sorta rough but the charm kept me going. I knew that I was playing a "thinking mans" FPS and was hooked.
I then discovered Fan Missions.. they remedied the rough textures of the OM's and I've never looked back :laff:

My first time playing Thief was around the very end of 2001, holiday season. I was in Switzerland, and was given a gaming magazine. It came with a disc, and on that disc was the full version of TDP. The unofrunate part is, it was in German.
Despite having absolutely no clue what I was meant to do, or even how to use an object, I felt like what I was seeing on my computer's screen was the coolest thing I will ever play.
Then I found out how to use objects, and looking at the pictures in the walkthrough (I think?) of Bafford's I found in the magazine, I got a vague idea of what I was supposed to do. Then I got to Cragscleft, and, terrified by the very first zombie I saw, the game remained unplayed until I remembered about it in 2006. Not just because of the zombies, mind you, but because I also had no clue what I was doing and figured that maybe zombies would be less of a problem if I did. I only actually got English copies to play in 2007; just before I'd been playing a Russian copy of TMA I borrowed from a friend (fortunately this time, the game's language was one I understood).
So yeah, that's my story. Despite understanding nothing, just looking at it and wandering the streets outside Bafford's told me that it was unique (and very, very cool) -- it didn't look like anything I'd played before, nothing was trying to kill me, and killing anyone was much harder than I was used to.

I can totally believe you, and concur that we just know it's something special on every level, flaws and all.

I first played the demo way back when it came out and then immediately bought the game. I loved the dark medieval setting. I was amazed that you actually got to play as a burglar who breaks into places and steals things. I became addicted and kept on playing until I made it to the undead missions. I hated the undead at first because they scared the shit out of my 13 year old self. I didn't like the scary monsters either, so I ended up putting the game away, and it sat on a shelf for years without me finishing it.
Last December I got the games out of storage and I played all the way through both Thief 1 and 2 in a couple of weeks and became hopelessly addicted all over again. Now I love the undead and the monsters too. I think those ape-men and bug-beasts are more cute now than they are scary. Then I discovered the FMs, and I've hardly played any other games except Thief since then.

Fan missions, eh?
I have played a large number of FMs for System Shock 2, but never any for Thief. What would you recommend from experience?
I've still only just barely scratched the surface when it comes to FMs, but I think my favorites so far would have to be Heist Society, the Mystic Gems series (I especially liked the second one), Wicked Relics, Equilibrium, Ominous Bequest and Rowena's Curse.

My first impression ?
"This game has terrific atmosphere !"

What caught my attention about TDP was its captivating realism from a time when games like half life and quake only tried making games cooler looking, rather than actually creating something that vaguely reminds me of gaming. That, and the fact that it is one of the few first-person games where you can use a sword and a blackjack...
Spot on !
