I was unimpressed, but I didn't look into it that deeply. I played again 6 months later and was hooked, thank the builder I did.
Loads of kids played it at my school and hated it, and i tried to talk them into giving it another go. I actually pity them for missing out.
I wasnt serious freaked out until haunted cathedral but still it wasnt so bad. The instructional attitude of ghosty hammer (marcus?) made it easy to know what to do.
In the Crade, I fell off my chair and pressed the off button repeatedly in utter panic after i turned around and my entire screen was filled with a screaming puppet head (My first encounter with one). Didnt play for like 5 days after that, and I couldn't figure out what to do, it was so difficult because I spent 10 minutes sneaking round every puppet (I couldnt even let them kill me, I had to re-load the game before they did, it was to freaky). It took me like a month to do that level.
Needless to say, horror wise, TDS made a greater impact on me then Thief 1

Also, stop friggin calling it "Thiaf" or "Thi4f" if you ultimately don't want the damn games name to be spelled like that everywhere.
I don't think the community is big enough to set trends... ;)

The community was big enough to partly influence the decision of making a Thief 4 (most likely). So yeah.

That, and the fact that somebody kept nagging that Japanese guy to give the :thumb: for a Thief sequel...
Whoever you are... :thumb:

Wait. What? You mean the petition for the release of old Thief materials, or what Japanese guy? Do you mean the head of Square-Enix? In case you do, Thief 4 was already underway (as far as EM pitching the idea to Eidos), before Square-Enix made their move.

Oh, um... Swap Japanese with Californian, then...

Hawaiians are closer to Japanese than Californians. DON'T YOU MEAN HAWAIIANS!
I smell succession in the air, or just dirty socks.

Wait, Eidos is based in Hawaii?
In that case, America was formed in the Philippines.

For me it was the photos on the back of the TDP box in a store! I liked them a lot plus the title of the box made me buy it on the spot without waiting to check its rating online.
Back home, in the first mission Bafford's manor, I remember standing still in the dark corner of the alley at the beginning of the mission, not doing anything but relishing the night, the loneliness and the sounds. From that time on, I was bitten deep and hooked.
Now, when family members enter my computer room and see the big ugly CRT monitor next to the all-new LCD monitor, they ask why do I keep it, and you can imagine their surprise when I reply that it is for the Thief games!! Because Thief never looked right for me on the LCD but shines on the CRT:)
Nice thread!
