I loathe room escape games, but I once had an idea for a game that could be transposed over to thief.
Think of a of a 3 x 3 x 3 cubed map i.e. 27 rooms, with each room being a puzzle in which there can be various ways to both enter and exit the room, as well as a number of red herrings. Every time you find an exit you get teleported into a new room at random.
The object of the game is to find the final exit or a special loot item, but as each room you enter is randomised you may have to go through as many as 40+ rooms before you get to the last room, or if you got lucky you may even start in the finish room.
The type of puzzles may include a room full of difficult beams, a room that you have to mantle up some tough walls, a room full of crates (some movable to hide different exits), a mirror puzzle room, a room full of cogs levers and buttons, a room full of guards that you need to get past by ghosting, you could even have a 3 dimentional maze.....I think you get the picture.
I expect this would be far to big and complex for a contest mission, but if it ever saw the light of day it could be one seriously challenging mission that has great replay value.

there is a fan mission called the cube, has similer quailtys, also a mission called burrick boy that uses the warps to differnt area's kinda a mix of those 2 missions sound like what you talking about?

I know about The Cube, The Cube was based on one large 3 dimentional puzzle finding you way through to the next room, and yes it was not easy, but each of the rooms were rather small so there was limited exploration in each room,it was just a case of finding a lever to frob that would open a trap door in another room.
But yes your correct the principle is similar
my idea would be on a grander scale with each room being approximately the size of the main arena in AMIDA
Giving each room a large enough space for complex puzzles, multiple pathways, 3 dimensional movement and with each room having 6-10 exit doors. Of course every room would also be full of traps.
To add to the fun it would be pointless quicksaving before you go through a door to see what was on the other side as when you reload next time you want through that door you would be teleported to a completely different room.

I have good memories of this FM, but it also was frustrating hard (like the first Missions of the Japanese Elevator-Missions, the hardest known missions out there). I am worried, that these FM's could be too hard for the broad mass of players out there.
A futurist concept may also fail, if the Authors need to ask for the permission of modern Objects (cars, street lanterns , and so on). There are only two Editors out there, who are using modern objects (GORT & Pedro), so they probably need to be asked first.
I somehow would like to see a gun mission out there - just like a typical James Bond mission: Sneak in the lair of the mysterious Dr. X, search for his evil plans unnoticed, the alarm goes off after finding the evidence and Garrett has to shoot his way out to get out alive. I don't know whether it is possible to use a gun in first person, but damn it would be so cool.

Both GORT and Cardia have uploaded some of their items to the Thief object repository to be freely used as long as credit is given.
I am 90% sure that they also allow people to take items directly from their missions and use them in their own, as long as credit is given.
There are also a lot of free 3D model websites around which let you use objects as long as you give credit (Cardia gets most of his modern day models from there, which he then converts to Thief).
So that wouldn't be a problem at all ;)

Good to hear about this! :cheeky:

The Strange Ventures Contest has now concluded. While there was a small turnout, we did get three new cool missions to play, so kudos to Dev_Anj and the authors for that! Well done all.
Thoughts may now turn to a new contest, perhaps? What say you, good taffers!
Non City?
The second mission of Random_Taffer's epic 'Godbreaker', was an absolute revelation for me! I must has spent seven hours in that map, just amazing. Quite inspiring too!
While I'm not suggesting we have a whole swathe of 'Swamp' FMs, just having authors think 'Outside the City' when it comes to their creation, might be fun.

I really liked the idea of the "Abandoned/Lost Places" contest. That allows authors a lot of freedom in what type of mission they want to tackle, which means we might get more authors willing to join in, and we'd get a lot of very different mission types to play around in (including swamps, but also ruins, mines, abandoned villages, old temples, haunted quarters... almost endless possibilities!). And a lot of interest has already been expressed towards the "Lost Places" concept in the thread, which means we might get a good number of contestants entering.
There were some other really cool suggestions in the thread but Lost Places probably has the most potential :D

I was going to start up a "Lost Places" contest (which also includes exotic locations/ancient ruins) as soon as the Strange Venture contest was finalized and a winner was announced.
So are you going to launch a Lost Places contest?
Ps. Another suggestion for future contest, we have never had a
Pagan contest or a contest with
The Hag as the central character, not even sure if anybody has ever seen the Hag, so would be interesting to see what authors came up with.
