Is it something to make the sounds better?
I was under the impression I had a really good sound card (audigy something or other) but it won't even let me select the option.

Do you have Windows Vista installed? Then you need Alchemy, to let eax work under thief. I'm sorry to say, that the version for Audigy is not free from creative (only for X-Fi) and the free version from daniel_k (was called "Alchemy Universal") has been removed - I suppose, that Creative has forbidden this.

This reminds me of the good old days when people would ask where they could download "pixel shader", since the new game they bought won't start without it :P

To answer your question, EAX is a sound system that's used to predict how sound travels through a 3-D environment, to the point of mimicking how sound bounces off rocks, metal, etc, as well as how it propagates through different sized areas (Compare and contrast how your voice echos in a giant hallway compared to in a small bathroom). It also helps with locational sounds. For instance, a foe that is behind you and a little to the left will actually SOUND LIKE he's there, instead of having his sounds come through all speakers or both cusps in your headphones.
You don't NEED EAX to play, but it definitely helps with immersion.

The positional sound has nothing to do with EAX actually (unless I'm terribly mistaken). EAX is just the echoey stuff, like a cathedral vs a bathroom. Positional audio just depends on your speakers and sound card setup, with Thief handling four speakers the best, stereo standard.

And frankly, EAX sounds like crap in thief.:( (In my opinion of course.) I actually thought it would sound good, but it makes the game really muffled, and therefore I prefer EAX switched to off.
And come on guys, we shouldn't make fun of a newbie/technically challenged invididual (well, how else should I put it?)
I'm also going to assume Nox, that you are indeed referring to either thief or thief 2, otherwise this is in the wrong forum.
And let me finally end with a welcome to the forums, as I see you are new here.:)

Well, i think Thief has some EAX functionality built in so that you don't need an EAX sound card... though i have found that with EAX running, some of my other games which have 0 EAX functionality suddenly do funny things with positional sound. *shrug*

Weirldly when I put EAX on the sounds are almost unaudible and muffled.
It even seems EAX works without being checked in the options menu since I can clearly distinguish a jumping sound on an outside environment from a jumping sound in a very small closed room.

Well in Thief EAX sometimes gets wonky... I've noticed the "muffled in a closet" thing, too... i -think- its a incompatibility with WinXP... i remember EAX being awesome under win98 *shrug*
