Well, the stupidest ways I've ever died in thief are:
1. Falling out of the window on the tower of fire, calmly saying "It's a long way down..." while hurtling towards doom.
2. My first run through Shipping and Recieving, walking on the catwalks on the Building A, the guards find me and I blindly jump over the railing to Garrett's death.
3. Climbing out of the river in Baffords and dying of SHAS where Garrett should have said "Inside at last!".
4. In "Life of the Party", playing at nighttime, it's so dark that Garrett just walks off a roof without knowing it!
5. In "Return to the Haunted Cathedral", getting hacked to death by zombies while reciting the prayer of consecration.
6. In the FM "Autumn in Lampfire Hills", Garrett's being chased by a bowguard outside the tavern. While fleeing he encounters another bowguard at 12 o'clock, that guard fires and shoots Garrett directly in his left eye. The screen was half-filled with the arrowhead!

Probably my funniest moment in Thief/Thief 2 that ended with me (Garrett) dying was in Thief 2. I can't remember the exactly level but it was the one where you had to switch all those transmitter switches.
I was in a big battle with 3 of the large karras robots when one of them fired a canonball which hit and rebounded off me and killed one of the other robots. At the time I laughed so much I almost fell off my chair (and was killed by another canon ball 2 seconds later). And had learned a valuable battle tactic that I used ALOT after that which was not to waste my water arrows on the large robots. My new tactic was to position myself in just the right places so that they would fire at me, but the canonball would rebound off a wall or whatever and bounce back at them, damaging or even better killing them. Took a while to master, but saved me alot of water arrows for when I needed them most :).

Throwing a mine in front of you can be done, but it can only be a couple of feet. You have about 3 seconds while the mine arms. You can hear it go Tick Tick Tick as it sets. Try it some time in a quiet corner. Drop the mine, and wait. You will hear it count off and set.
And of course, in T2 you can pick it up again by disarming it with the lockpick.

Isn't disarming mines also possible in Dark Project/Gold? I could have sworn I disarmed a couple in the spider cells of Randall's basement.

I had a sudden heart attack playing Thief 1 which freaked me out and had me paranoid, as I was in the Lost City and near the end, wasn't enjoying it, hoping that it wouldn't happen again so was cautious to hit quicksave.
But apart from that, I played Thievery (doesn't really count but I don't care). A thief had used a rope arrow to get on top of a building, and as a guard I went up there in pursuit. When I got to the top of the rope he removed it from the wooden barrier, and I fell to my death

The first time I played Cragscleft I just had to find out what that greish lump lying on the floor groaning at me was. I completely froze for a couple of seconds when it jumped up and figured I was ripe for eating... After that I was very afraid of zombies for some time. Espeacially when they were lying still and groaning when I got too close. That was much worse than having them chase me.

I'm pretty sure you can only disarm them with lockpicks in Thief 2 - the best you can do in T1/G is detonate them with an arrow or thrown object. However, you can pick them up normally before they arm properly.

The stupidest way I've ever died is I was rounding a corner and when I did I ran straight into a guard who Imediately hit me, killing me. It was like 12 at night and I jumped back when everyone else in my house was asleep and screamed. Everyone woke up and thought something bad happened. I think I was on like the first level on T2 or something. Anyways now I always lean around corners. Waiting to now scare the guards. Now every time I wait for the guard to start walking then I round the corner real quick with my BlackieJack, and hit him when he jumps back. It's definitly worth it man. :thumb:

this isn't from thief, but it's related...
I put off playing Half-Life for awhile, so when I finally broke down and played it for the first time, I was already a huge fan of Thief. Anyway, I'd just reached the part in the beginning with a crevasse full of water and a door on the other side. I knew I had to get to the other side, so I looked around for a bridge of some sort. Hmm, no bridge, but what are all these vines hanging from the ceiling? I know, I'll just climb one and jump over, like a rope arrow! Okay, I'll just climb until I'm high enough to ... wait ... why am I still climbing? Hey, this isn't a --- *crunch*
After that, I made a point of destroying every Barnacle I saw, just on principle.

That must've been funny. To bad I missed it. :p ;)
