I wouldn't mind a little modern soundtrack for the main menu maybe "Gangster's Paradise". Garrett is turned into a black thug like in GTA SA, having to build up muscle to gain respect of his homies.
In the actuall game you then have to win rap battle instead of lockpicking.
for real: I fear they maybe wear out the true characters and turn them somehow into these typical game characters. especially a sentimental Garrett would be an atrocity - having a pupil or some kind of realtionship with so.

Do I have to repeat it?
My worst nightmare is to see a modern Thief, 3rd person only.

...I've read your posts and I think I have nothing to add :)
Most of all I agree with

Modern
Not Garrett
If those two things are avoided, I can deal with whatever broken mechanics and bad writing you want.

I'd buy that.

- In-game advertisement. Perfect on all those wall tapestries!
- "To play this game you need a Games for Windows Live(tm)(c)(r) Account", then while playing bright white achievement messages pop up in the top right corner of the screen... like "10P - Sneak by 2 guards without them noticing anything"
- Stupid minigames when lockpicking or doing other things (T3 was already shitty in that regard, but just imagine an even worse idea)
- New voice
- Aliens!
And the last level will be something along the lines of "enter the alien spacecraft undetected, steal X shiny sci-fi hi-tech gadgets to make the ship explode, and then you've saved the world! And you get the girl in the end and retire from thievery due to being a famous hero"
(Developer comment: "we have supernatural stuff already so they fit in too")
- To make the game more playable for players with impaired vision, all areas have been majorly lit up and you have easy vision even in pure darkness
- To further expand the audience, Garrett is now really tough and can play levels like it was Quake... all the hardcore fans can simply choose not to and go the thievy route. More flexibility, and easier for FPS players!
- Hint popups (which can't be disabled), glowing footsteps to show the way, maps which always show an arrow where you are, ...
- Epic, bombastic soundtrack ala Transformers
- Bullet (arrow) Time!
- Thief 4 being developed by a completely new, unproven, unknown studio which is insane enough to start working on the sequels of 2 of the most famous and groundbreaking games ever.
Oh wait...

To me the worst that can possible happen is a sequel I don't enjoy playing; the silver lining, however, is that the original 2 and even DS will always be there to be played and enjoyed for many more years to come.
We'll always have Paris.
Edit: It would be pretty bad if they had Garrett as the main character, but Stephen Russell wasn't the voice. That'd be a nightmare. EM: If you can't get Stephen, write Garrett out of the script.
