As a teenager i played The Dark Project on release for a good while. And i was sometimes really frightened by the game - in a good way. I recall a friend´s class teacher also recommending the game to all of his pupils. :D
When The Metal Age came out, i was anticipating it, but then read in reviews that the spirit of the original got a little watered down and that there wasn´t that much innovation - which was enough for me to defy the temptation of the new release, taking the standpoint that "sequels get worse these days". And so I never played it. Oh the foolishness, cause little did i know how BAD it actually could get in the forthcoming years with game sequels - up to 2014 where we are about to gloriously reach new heights of badness in sequels! :D
Naturally, i never touched Deadly Shadows as well.
However, through the recent years i´ve watched a good amount of Thief 2 playthroughs on Youtube and i agree now that it is a good game as well (though i prefer TDP). :)
I keep using the soundtracks of both games (thx to Child of Karras) in various P&P sessions while playing "The Dark Eye" with friends nowadays. Especially the Thief 1 soundtrack is something i also listen to a LOT still every other day to just relax or get inspired.

I played T1:TDP shortly after its release after I saw a co-worker playing it and knew it was the game for me. I got Thief Gold on release day, played the demo T2 for months to the point I was almost disappointed with T2 mission Uninvited Guest because I didnt like the map changes and the dialogue alterations.
T3 was also a release day play, while I was disappointed at the new engine, I did really like some of the story line, esp the mission in the haunted asylumn.
I'm really worried about the T4 "re-envision" of thief, but I'm still going to buy it, for the same reason I liked T2x and The Dark Mod, its a game style I enjoy, even if the story is different.

I bought TDP (Sold Out version) in January 2002. I had just moved to a new apartment and was told by the ISP that it would take a month before I could get an Internet connection, so I figured I'd get something new to play in the meantime. Though I remembered that the first two games both got good reviews and that one of my friends had raved about T2 when it came out, I wasn't sure something like Thief would be my cup of tea - I thought it might be too action-oriented for my tastes, but since it was cheap, I figured I didn't have much to lose. I remember getting stuck in Bonehoard and taking a bus to the university in the evening to get access to the net and a walkthrough - I was so captivated by the game that I just couldn't wait for my next class. I then bought TMA as soon as I had finished TDP. Bought TDS around the time it came out, but couldn't play it right away, because my computer was old and still running Win 98, which TDS didn't support.

2001. I first played Thief 2 Demo and then the Thief Gold Demo. Then in 2003, I got the full Thief 1 and 2. So I played 1 and then 2. I got 3 but never had the chance to play it due to the system requirements and constant lagging.

I can't honestly remember. Iirc, it was after Gold was released, but before Deadly Shadows.

Rather easy for me to answer, considering the memories associated with each. Having said that, I can't tell you the exact day of the years.:p
So, Thief: The Dark Project I first played in 1999. I explained this in the Who Are You? thread here on the forums a long time ago.
As for Thief 2, I remember buying a trapezoidal copy of the game from ebay during the summer of 2001 and checking the mail often because I was anticipating it being in my hands greatly.:)
