I took the exit key and opened the double lock titled "Gate", but can't find where/what is opened as a result.
As for the storyline, yeah, I agree. While everything else was fine, the spider allied with the guards there totally broke it...
Also, the objectives... Find the key on the guard in the caves appearing out of nowhere, without any rhyme or reason -- when that guard is miles away... And the Cpt. Obvious's Father Joe and Maureen's secret... If it was worded as just "Maureen's secret", it would have been some suspense as it could still have been possible it was with Samuel, for example.... And the totally garbled "Find some arrows" objective. It triggers only on getting to a specific location with five broadheads, not even getting them. Nevermind there are way more arrows in other places.

I've been exploring the caves and have found and used the exit key. Will the "find out the writer's identity" and "rescue Tommy" objectives be ticked off after leaving the caves, or is there something more I'm supposed to find down here? The way to the exit looks rather tricky, and I'd hate to have to backtrack my way to the caves.

I've climbed up and out of the caves. I'm in a courtyard, there are no openable doors and I don't see anything to rope arrow up to. Now what?

There's also a separate wndow on teh perimeter that has soem goodies in it.
