Let's see this is quite the complicated story so I will try to stick to the bare minimum.
Back in 2004 my fiance left me for someone else after a very long relationship. I also lost my house, etc, etc. It was essentially a divorce, we just weren't married yet. Anyways, I ended up living in a situation with friends and suddenly found my financial state much freer than it had been, so I was buying a lot of games to soothe and distract me.
In Dec 2004 I got my first real computer (ie 1+ ghz cpu) and while looking for PC games I saw an article in game Informer about Thief: Deadly Shadows. I thought it looked pretty good, but I was playing other things at the time (mostly SSX3 and Sims2). Then I was chatting with someone from modthesims about horror games, and they told me about The Cradle. I went and got TDS the next day, and thanks to it's (imho) good training level, was off and running. I played it exclusively for a month, picking pockets, robbing houses over and over, along with playing the missions, and the expereince was like nothing I had ever played before. Even backstabbing was so different from anything like Doom or Half Life. I was one of those people who liked to hide, and scare people when I was younger. Or even just hide to see if I could remain unnoticed, so Thief was right up my alley.
Then the person from modthesims told me that TDS was the 3rd game, and pointed me here. I joined and a month later got the first two games on ebay, and fell in love all over again. While certainly different styles between TDS and TG/TMA my first experience was TDS so that's where my first impressions came from. You can all say how much you hate it, but it must have gotten something right, since it made me hungry for more of the same type of gameplay.
My first memory of TDS was "Oh wow, this is so cool! This is way better than blowing everything up." My first memory of TG was "Wow this one has a lot more atmosphere, I am so glad I found these games." And I still am.

I think I got TDP from a friend (some magazine version) in the early 2000s and played three or four missions before leaving it for a while because it was too hard or I didn't manage to find the right playing style yet. Nevertheless we got TMA a bit later, played through it (I remember hearing Garrett's comment about the Lost City "again" and deciding that I indeed have to go back and play the first part). That's the time when playing the game made me want to go outside at night and walk around the streets.
In 2003 or so I joined the (old) German Eidos forums during the TDS anticipation and remained a strong critic - mainly because of loading zones and the lack of the previously excellent German dub - until the autumn 2004 when I finally got it (along with an adequate computer). And despite the obvious flaws (not including the body & movement thing yet) I got caught by the atmosphere it had, probably due to the cozy music and the harmonic visuals you could enjoy when waiting for a guard to walk by. Still I associate TDS with the weather of late autumn and early winter and have the urge to play this game when the time comes. Unfortunately my proper computer is gone at the moment. :erg: I think Thiev IV will be good enough for me on a basic level if it gives me the go-out-at-night feeling once more.

I actually bought it for my son the Christmas TDP came out but I didn't get a chance to see it as we didn't have a computer that would run it. He went home, played it and loved it so when he built us a new computer the next June, he sent it with the computer for us to try. My husband blew through it, killing things like crazy and I watched. Then I tried it but I really got into the sneaking. I almost quit when I hit Craigscleft because I couldn't get through the metal floored workrooms but after some phone coaching by my son, I made it and I've never stopped playing Thief since. :)

Geez, that must've been when I was somewhere around 5-10 years old. A good family friend owned Thief: The Dark Projects, and I used to watch my oldest sister play it. I woulf sit next to her with a blanket so I could cover myself if something scary happened XD

TDP included in my Video card package. It came with a couple of others that I did not even check once I had installed and played TDP.
I still think that the original unpatched version of TDP was the best of them all. Even with the bugs, it was and is, in my never humble opinion, the best of them all.

Yes, kind of old school :) I loved The Sword in the 1.14 version, without the LITTLE-BIG world, also.

I played the Thief 2 demo which was a revelation at the time. I had not long got a new computer of my own to replace the 486. My friend loved it but I was obsessed, we quickly got Thief 2 but he located Thief Gold for my birthday.

I feel very lucky to have stumbled upon Thief. My dad bought a graphics card 10 years ago that came with four free games. One of them was Thief TDP (the other 3 were crappy). I am entirely confident that had he not bought that graphics card, I would've never played it.
Why they packaged TDP with a graphics card for free back then I have no idea..but I'm damn thankful they did!
