Absolutely. They've already said that they, "want the player to be able to play the game... without touching a weapon," and certainly social engineering would help further that end.

What would rock would be if they used all three. On starting the game, you'e given hree options.
You choose Tong, the datacubes don't exist, the net doesn't exist. BUT corporations and police won't be in your way.
You choose the Illuminati, and they will help you, BUT guys like Smuggler won't.
You choose Helios, and JC knows EVERYTHING (all data cubes etc are already logged, but finding the relevent one is hard), and Helios is there to offer advice. BUT there is a revolutionery army trying to wrest power from you, the AI...

This is a somewhat already-passed argument here, but it is what the thread is about, so I'll put in my feelings on the subject:
The nature of Deus Ex entirely fails to coincide with the idea of a sequel built upon a forced-decision and forced-situation that is being merged with Helios. Yes, at any rate, a sequel based on the assumption that Denton did his thing another way (vauge here on purpose, this IS a non-spoilers forum) would still fit the player into a fixed situation, but from the start, at least, JC doesn't have his personality imposed upon by some other being, which definitely to me sounds too restrictive.
Who knows. Personally, though it may sound stupid, I'd much rather prefer that they build whatever world they'd like regardless of DX1. Sure, it's rather contradictory to the ideas and concept behind the original (i.e. your deicisions really matter), but on the other hand I really think the benefits from a new, fresh storyline and unrestricted possibilities would greatly outweigh the benefits of coninuing a single storyline whose climax has already (one can assume) been reached.

Hi all. :) I've been in the DX community for a while now, but this is the first time I've posted here (I was on the official boards until they closed down, then migrated elsewhere).
Anyway, I remember an interview somewhere in which either HS or WS said that they were doing something special in regards to the different endings, something that hadn't really been done before. This was a while ago, so it might have been changed, but if anyone could pull off something special, it's those two. :D
For some more speculation, (
http://www.eidosgames.com/ubb/Forum25/HTML/000527.html) here's a link to a thread at the Eidos boards by TechImmortal. It's a very well thought out theory. Be warned it contains many many spoilers, so don't read it unless you've finished the game (preferrably multiple times).

If it starts 10 years after DX1 who knows how the world will be like. Just wait and see... :)

Hmm. With regards to the Dark Ages (Tong) ending...
Technology.
The problem with technology is that it's orders of magnitude easier for people to use it than understand it. Maybe you built your computer yourself, but chances are you're not one of a handful of people on the planet who knows how to design a CPU and supporting hardware from scratch.
Technology will certainly still exist after the Tong ending... But I have a feeling that in 50 years, even fewer people would have the necessary abilities to design and develop new technology. ESPECIALLY nanotech. I can't see nanotech EVER going black-market or becoming mass-produced in the public domain like some people predict. Nano-Augs aren't exactly going to become as prevalent as a fashion statement.
I'll jump past bits of my train of thought here, but does anyone see the possible similarity here to the Battletech universe?
Somebody mentioned DX2 would feature a new organization which "worships" technology. What immediately pops into my head? Battletech's ComStar - a "corporation" that controls all forms and methods of communication. My rememberance of the specific lore is sketchy, but I'll try to explain - They have a monopoly on communication simply because they are the only ones that understand how the technology works anymore, and even then, nobody's sure if they understand it. To see their technicians operate equipment would seem more like a religious rite - surviving operating manuals are holy relics. The few with actual knowledge are high priests. They are reclusive and share none of their secrets with others.
As a result of ComStar's closed nature and subsequent monopoly, they basically became the highest authority in the BT universe. Cutting long and short-range communications to an individual faction or clan would naturally render them entirely unable to organize and fight.
Whether an organization like this could crop up in 10 years is definitely questionable... But I think that would be half the fun. Think of it - The last remaining architects of Internet 3 band together and try to conserve the knowledge of how the system that all computers in the world depended on worked. Maybe it started out as a need for some kind of solution to quell the initial chaos... Localized, jerry-rigged Internet 3 hubs for neighborhoods or cities, so small regions could continue to function, albeit in a limited state.
After awhile, these gurus are looked upon as saviours in more than a few ways. They saved what they could while society was on the brink of collapse, and the resulting hero-worship and fanaticism forces them to become reclusive.
Like monks in the... dark ages.

Whatever they're doing.. Spector certainly seems proud of it. He's already claimed he thinks it's that much better than the original (Deus Ex).

Brotherhood of Steel anyone? Or more likely, the Enclave.

Most likely there will be some ingenious way in which all three endings will still lead to the outcome we are faced with in DX2. TechImmortal has made some speculations based on his observations of subtle facts in DX1.
Here is a quote from me on another forum:
The Illuminati could still come out on top in every scenario. First consider the Helio ending. We see Morpheus at Everett's apartment. He was a prototype of a much larger system. Everett was also involved with the Echelon IV project. Could he have been directly or indirectly involved with the self-awareness of either Daedalus or Icarus? If that were true, perhaps a Helios/JC merge would still maintain programming from Everett (PhD) who was a skilled AI programmer. Perhaps the merge was all part of his master plan. Sometimes to hide a true motive, you embed programming in a distributed manner and only when they combine (Helios) do you get the entire programming and the true ordinance is manifested.
Now on to the Tracer Tong ending. Remember the hub at the Chateau DuClaire? Perhaps it was part of a much larger system created and owned by Everett. In essence it was a duplicate of Area 51. With Trace Tong's destruction of the Aquinas hub, all data routing would immediately be regulated through the Europe hub, which is controlled by Everett. Again he has succeeded in gaining control. In all three endings, Everett has been able to take power from Bob Page. This fits in well with the idea of America vs. Europe. The tactics of Bob Page does have similarities with the way American conducts business. He succeeds because of the immense power and resources at his disposal. Everett would represent the European methods involving age-old conspiracies and the invisible hand.

Personally I'd think it would be cool if DX2 had three different beginnings which all turned into the same end. That would be kinda like a mirror image of the first DX.
