He called it Narrenturm? Not bad, but after all bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire back then. There's a dentist dwarf in The Witcher by the way named Zahin Schmartz or something which is a malapropism of Zahnschmerz, the German word for toothache. The Witcher books/game are quite mature already, I guess I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for the hint.

...many books have only snippets that are related to the games... Thieves' World novels...
Agreed. Outside of fan fiction it's quite hard to find something that captures the exact Thief feel. Nevertheless, I think the Thieves World series comes quite close, although is in a more straightforward fantasy setting. Especially the stories featuring Shadowspawn and a couple of other guys often have a similar feel. Also, the city of Sanctuary reminds me quite a lot of Thief's "The City" with its ruthlessness, dirt, etc.

I am going to recommend the game and movie for '80 Days'. It never gets mentioned around here, even though it is good steampunk. The game has its share of bugs, but is a fun adventure game.

Although it's connection to Thief is not that explicit, this little book series from the early era of the fantasy genre is pretty much "thievish" in terms of architecture and atmosphere :

It's also the first book series with steampunk elements and overtones.

Great series of steampunk animated shorts by Australian director Anthony Lucas. Pretty typical steampunk setting filled with Verne-esque adventure.
Original animation and visuals though, as well as an interesting protagonist and good build-up of atmosphere. Seems to be influenced by the style of several classic writers of the 19. or 20. century, including Poe and Lovecraft.
Best decribed as : Dark. Melancholic. Eerie.
To be honest... One of the few good steampunk films I've seen so far.

Cool. One can never tell if a video will be blocked outside of a specific country. The other day, I was watching an interview on YouTube, uploaded in 7 parts, and part 5 was not available in the U.S., although all the parts had been uploaded one after the other by the same guy. The uploader didn't know how it happened.:D

God guys, you all forget about the books of Raymond E. Feist, especially those involving Jimmy the hand, a great thief ;) the book Jimmy the hand and the Krondor series are the ones with the most thievery,
Also The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan got some thievery in it if I remember correctly
