As much as I agree with that, you cannot relive or redo the *first time* for anything! We wish, I know.
Use the first Thief as a foundation, and build on that. They got it right the first time, learn from that, listen to the fans. Make it a story. Don't dumb us down. We've had enough of that already.

Inverted manse, despite being rated top, I don't think they should. I loved the mission, but could never 'properly' get into it and completed it over several sessions, when i normally play until i win. in my opinion it suffered from overcomplexity in moving on in the level.
The one thing I want to see after T3 is a return to smooth continuity where it is only the skill that holds you back, not that you cant be bothered to search every room for an obscure key that only gives you another key like some FM's.
I agree with nicked, yandros and Tanner in that the FM's are often fantastic as stand alones, but ideas should not be taken from a specific mission.
More like just themes from them. For example, i forget its name, the one where you have to find the keeper in a huge forest covered in mist. These weather effects added so much atmosphere to the game. I played with fog broken first time and couldnt see what was so great. The fog changed everything, in a way that wasn't played upon in the OM's.
Ones like Errand boy from tricksters gem mine also had a great versatility to it. You could solve the map in several different ways, and miss things out all together. It was like what i wanted Thief 3 cityscape to be. Where you could go on proper detailed missions.

I agree to an extent, B'Arts. I still think the devs could benefit from checking out TMA (continuity & improved graphics), as well as quite a few FMs that would illustrate the possibilites of newer graphics, architecture, sound, objects, and AI interaction.

Of course, I strictly play T2 right now. My comment was purely based on the story, and what does make Thief work. Both games do just that. They need to get back to basics, and then of course, expand on that.
Only time will tell, whether or not it will be delivered to us. Or is this all just more hype, and another disappointment awaits us.
We'll see.

Eh...I would rather they use T2 as a foundation. T1 had too much creature fighting and zombie mashing for me. Such things shouldn't be left out completely, but I think TDP relied too heavily on them.
As far as FMs go, I absolutely think that the team should go with their own ideas and not be influenced by any FM stories or whatnot, but there's nothing wrong with getting a little creative inspiration. If you want to write a science fiction novel, would you not read some science fiction best-sellers to help direct your creativity? I think looking at some of the best-loved FMs would have that same effect for the developers of Thief 4.

Great idea for a thread, fett. Once I finally finish Thief:DS I plan on returning to the older games and FMs for a dip into nostalgia. Never really played any so an essential best of list is cool beans.

First let me agree the devs should absolutely play TG, TMA, and TDS. Rather than suggesting any FMs though, I'd simply like to point out that the fans here tend to heavily bless the most innovative and well produced FMs with page after page of praise and questions. One of the several ways I calculate "Must play FMs" in my thread are by response count to an FM thread. Usually the ones with 9 or more pages of responses are the FMs that have the most praise. I'd say those are good FMs for the devs to check out, and incidentally also happen to mostly be the FMs whose names crop up most often in threads like this.

I wonder if they'll have a research team. Job spec: Research Thief by playing all the FMs available and take notes. How cool would that job be?

I think they shouldn't play any fan mission as that would distract from the main story line.
