Wait...which game are you referring to?
Thief 1. In T1, I think that in some missions, a) the areas are confusing, and b) the map is not helpful, which is why I've spent time running around aimlessly, because I couldn't figure out which tunnels I've already been to or where is that hard-to-find entrance that I've missed.
T2 was the most balanced game in this regard; the areas were large enough, but the layout wasn't confusing and the map was actually useful, so for me, T2 would be the model of how areas in Thief should be. I agree that the areas in T3 could have been somewhat larger, but my point is, if I have to choose between the meandering and confusing areas of T1 and the smaller, simpler areas of T3, I'll choose T3 any day of the week.

I don't consider the lack of rope arrows to be a game-breaker, and the "inferiority" of the climbing gloves is just your subjective opinion.
No, they are objectively inferior. Climbing gloves only allow vertical movement on walls, and only "special" walls at that. Rope arrows, on the other hand, allow vertical movement anywhere that a patch of wood or dirt is present. You can't drop down from the rafters, grab some loot, and ascend back out of sight using climbing gloves.
Climbing gloves are also endemic of the overall dumbing down of TDS. Instead of having to aim and launch a rope arrow, you just fling your entire body at a wall like that "Arguing on the Internet" kid.

Ok, in terms of freedom of movement, they are inferior. But in terms of gameplay, I didn't find that change to be terribly drastic, since the missions in T3 have, for obvious reasons, been designed in a way that doesn't have as much of an emphasis on climbing. I might have missed the rope arrows if I'd actually had situations where I felt "if only I could get there by shooting a rope arrow in the rafters", but the only such situation that comes to mind is the special loot painting in End of the Bloodline.

I like the silly-but-potentially-rewarding experience of tossing a crate up onto a wall, firing a rope arrow into it and climbing up for a look-see.:D

...special loot...
And don't even get me started on the moronic "special loot" objectives. Yeah, nothing helps build immersion quite like having "special loot" to nab. I suppose you gotta phrase these things in terms the console kiddies will understand.

But by far the worst thing is that the movement is totally ruined.
. . . This allowed for complex movement and climbing BUT it was dependent on the smooth and very tight walking. This is ruined in TDS - the lean is stupid sidestep, it's far too easy to slip off ledges, the walking is lurching in comparison. In fact the whole "body-awareness" is a misnomer as you are much more clumsy in TDS.
And I think this is the one reason why I keep stopping playing. I haven't been able to get rid of being aware of myself all the time.
And as for rope arrows, I love my rope arrow even more than my bj.

Does that work? Well that says it all - you learn something new every day about this game.

Damn! I never even thought of trying that!

Once you get the crate up there, flush with the wall's face or hanging over a bit on your side, walk a good distance back from the wall and sink your rope arrow near the top of the crate. This will maximize your maneuverability. You can do this on ledges, too, or anywhere you can get a crate to settle onto. Quicksave before you start, of course.
