The Thief series is a trilogy about loss and restoration of balance ("The essence of balance...") and as such you have to examine each part in the context of the whole.
In Thief 1 nature is out of balance.
In Thief 2 technology is out of balance.
In Thief 3 the overseers of balance become inwardly corrupted and thus unbalanced.
Garrett is the only real vessel that is truly detached as he has forsaken the Keepers, and as such is the only one who can really restore the balance. His allegiance shifts so that he can better achieve this, even though he is too stubborn and self absorbed to realise it, and his destiny, until the very end.

I'm enjoying thief 2 much more than Deadly Shadows.
I'm on the 7th or so mission

For one reason, I usually hear thief 2 is the best
Yeehaw! playing games in backwards order!

Indeed. And as Randy goes on to say (in the (
http://www.gamer20.com/features/201/1/) Amped one anyway), the story of TMA had to be moulded by the mission designs rather than, more naturally, having a story first, and then basing the levels from it.
Note how he only calls the cancelled Looking Glass project "Thief 3". Heh.

That's a matter of opinion. I liked it a lot, but I still like Thief Gold the best. BTW, if you intend to play the first game, you should try to get the Gold version, rather than The Dark Project. It has some bug fixes, three new missions and it just feels more balanced.

I do get the impression that Thief 2 is (by a small margin) the most popular and honestly it's the one I like best but there was a certain rawness to Thief 1 and a flow and the odd standout level to Thief 3 that stood them above Thief 2 in certain aspects too.

'a flow'? You're referring to TDP, right? I experienced no 'flow' in TDS other than it was the end game that pretty much tied-up the whole Garrett saga. If anything, while playing TDS I started feeling rather like a little mechanical character that once wound up and set down would careen rather jerkily on a narrow path that goes from A to B. No 'flow'; just prescribed movement.
'odd standout level'? The only thing that stoodout in TDS (imo) was the terribly obvious, in-your-face-here-I-am-where-only-a-moron-could-miss-me loot glint. And all the other glaring omissions or disappointments that I (& a lot of other taffers) mentioned previously. The only things about TDS that I felt were superior to TDP & TMA in
any way were the lighting, graphics, & textures. Other than that, no contest. (Once again, just mho.)
P.S. jtr: absolute genius of an idea using the crate/rope arrow method! :thumb: Never even thought of it. :o

Basically this is the same old argument that I see in so many forums/scenarios.
Thief 1 and 2 are so similiar and so close-together timeline wise, that Thief 3 (being much later) is considered "too different". Personally, I don't look for the reasons NOT to play any thief game, I play any thief game when and if I feel like it. It just so happens to be the earlier two games in most cases.
This also happened with Doom. The first two games are so close-together timeline wise, and look so similiar, that Doom 3 (being much later) is considered "too different". Also, as is the case with alot of bands, a band will release a debut album. They will get fans for that album. Then they release another album later. They get MORE fans for that album. BUT the original fans might find it too different.
In all these cases you will get people saying "I think this one is better" or "I like this one" or "this sucks". This will happen all the time. My best advice to find out which game you like best, is to go and play it yourself.
...and going right to the root of it all, this argument is practically over (as far as this thread is concerned), because the poster who started this topic says he likes Thief 2 more than Thief 3.

Yeah, like how System Shock fans rejected System Shock 2 for being "too different". Or like how GTA fans rejected GTA3 for being "too different". Or like how Super Mario Bros fans rejected Super Mario 64 for being "too different".
Oh, wait...
