TDS too different? If you mean it happens to be broken in just too many places... sure. I got around my dislike for loot glint, the torturous paganspeak, lack of ropearrows, loadzones and all the other small details and was pretty much enjoying myself. Then I ran into those it-doesn't-matter-if-we're-not-stealthy-at-least-we-look-cool Enforcers. How can anyone even pretend that TDS lives up to its thiefsy predecessors with this sort of nonsense :nono: ? I'm not saying the game was rubbish, The Cradle and the implementation of picking locks was so sweet, but in the end it just made all the flaws feel so much more depressing.
(Of course it wasn't until after I finished the game that I noticed the Kurshok's weak spot: Crouching! )

I always fear this kind of theards because they often become flames. Pointless flame.
They're 3 good games. But we have to see something more.
Thief 1 and Thief 2 are pieces of a singular vision of what games could be. Plot, atmosphere, design. They're like one game split in two story.
Thief 3 is another game. Enjoyable, positive, great graphic, etc..., but it's another game. I cannot explain but, "i'have a bad feeling about this".
I've finished it, and now i will restart from beginning, because i like it very much, but i do not feel the same like Thief 1-2.

Exactly. What I mean by TDS being "too different" is the fact that -- if you made even just a couple of the Thief II levels for Thief 1 (before Thief 2 came out), and you told me they were just FMs, I would believe you. Thief 2 isen't really another game, it's just a slightly-beefed up Thief 1. Where as Thief 3 bears little semblance to the other two (the main resemblance being the storyline and setting).

It's pretty analogous to the way Fallout 1&2 were done close together on the same engine, and then here comes Fallout 3 much later during a very different climate. Witness yet another obstinate (sorry "nostalgic") nerd fanbase rip this game a new one, doesn't matter if it's good or not
I found Thief 3 to be a pretty compelling piece of entertainment. To me it had the richest atmosphere, a very flowing narrative (compared to the plodding T1 and very disjointed T2), fantastic audio production (Eric's at the top of his game), and some of the most memorable humor of the series. I hold T1 and T3 pretty equally, with T2 trailing behind in most areas aside from gameplay space. I try to regard actual game content over trivialties like loot glint, climbing methods, and loading.

It's clear to me that the people that hated Thief Deadly Shadows are just pissed off veterans who are trying to re-live their youth playing Thief The Dark Project. I can honestly say that I have never been torn away from my life so much as when Thief and Half Life were around in 1998/99, but Thief cut it for me. But it is quite frustrating when people are put off with a different engine, Thief 2 would have been shat on if it wasn't almost identical to the Dark Project. I personally loved Deadly Shadows, it was an up-to-date version of Thief, dumbed down maybe but still so much more engaging than anything around at the time and certainly worthy of the Thief tag.

This similarity argument is garbage. Thief 2 was reamed for not being different enough on a fairly regular basis, by T1 fans and casual players alike.

Uh...okay. Could you calm down so we can take you seriously? If you mean bask in the warm-feelings one got as their paradigm was shifted forever, we know that's not gonna happen. And--no offense to the senior taffers--but some of us were no longer in our youth when the games came out. Very few of us HATE TDS, but between the Thiefy moments that made us smile we were pretty disappointed.

I don't know about being put off by a different engine. I can see how the creators of FM's would have a problem with it, since it means having to choose between the two. Relearning a new editor can be no fun. Anyway, many of us were put off by what the newer engine COULDN'T do that the old one could. Want a list?

dumbed down maybe but still...See? You actually agree with our assessment and don't know it.;) And could you please calm down?

I think that TDP and TMA were about equal, but TDS fell quite a bit short of that. The loading zones were my main problem, as well as the loot glint and Garrett's inability to swim in water which only went up to his waste. I also thought the city areas were way too small, I think it was said earlier that they should have been at least half the size of 'Ambush.' That's about right, in my opinion.
On the plus side, the areas which were there were reasonably well created with a decent atmosphere. It was great seeing street fights between the Enforcers and Hammerites (although the Enforcers have to be the worst stealthers in the world) . I just felt there was a fair bit more they could have done to make it live up to the originals more.
Final Verdict=
TDP-9.5/10
TMA-9/10
TDS- 8/10

Dark Project was a revelation back in '99, 5 years later Deadly Shadows wasn't doing anything new. It wasn't that bad a game, it just had rather a lot to live up to.
For me: 1, 2 and 3 in the order I played them, though Metal Age sneaks into joint first place for having lashings of ginger beer fan missions.
