I'd just been replaying TDP over in Expert for the first time. Some of the levels are really different and new to me, like the Mystic Soul/Heart sections in the Bonehoard. I'm on Return to the Cathedral at the moment and man, this level never gets old. I could be wrong but I swear there are even more baddies here than on Normal. And they seem much more alert. A few hours ago I'd just finished talking to Murus under the broken stairs near the Cloister and went up the back door to St. Yora's. I waited until the two patrolling zombies were out of sight; coast was clear, so I went in and ran up the stairs to the right. In the distance I heard the sound of chains and the unmistakable laughter of an alerted haunt. I thought, well I must've made too much noise walking up the tiled floor, but the noise was faint and I'm all the way up on the second floor now, so I wasn't too worried. I entered the room with that ark and the 3 water arrows, rounded a corner, and out of nowhere something clobbered me from behind and before I could even say oh sh*, hit me again. I turned around just in time to witness this skull-faced horror strike a third and final time, killing my hapless avatar. I checked my pulse. I tell you that coast was clear!!!! Somehow he spotted me going up those stairs and followed me up with frightful speed. I swear no matter how many times I play this game and tangle with these baddies; no matter how much you think you've figured them out, every once in a while they'll pull one of these WTF?! moments and get you. And all you can do is nervously laugh it off, reload the game, and change your underwear. Not necessarily in that order.

I usually skipped the undead missions when I was younger. The first undead mission I took seriously was the bonehoard. I was going to give myself exposure therapy by dancing with the zombie on the grass. It took me 10 minutes to get the courage up to walk over him to wake him up instead of just inching up and then running away behind the open tombs.
Eventually I got him to wake up, then I ran on top of the toppled coffin and just stared at him until I got used to it, then I hopped down and circled him for a bit, then I put him down with the sword and proceeded on with the level. I went slowly, but I eventually came to terms with the undead and am happy with running past the zombies because they're so darn slow. Haunts still give me the jitters though.
