I'm thinking of getting a sci-fi game of some sort and I'm thorwing up between Mass Effect and Unreal Tournament 3. I really like both of them, big Bioware fan and a long time player of the UT series. I suppose it's really a question of If I need an RPG or an FPS. I'm leaning towards UT3 for the moment since I haven't got many FPSes and haven't played a good one in a long time(S.T.A.L.K.E.R:Shadows of Chernobyl was the last one)
So what do you guys think?
Oh and I don't have any hardware limitations my PC can run pretty much all modern games normally.

I'm not into MP FPSs much, but from UT1 and Q3 I remember they don't have (and don't need) any advanced story, you just set up arena, opponents and go hunting? Then you can take UT3 sessions in 30-min. doses when you need some adrenaline boost.
As for serious singleplayer gaming, go with Mass Effect. It will consume more time, but the experience will be more fulfilling.

I think that since you haven't played a good FPS in a long time, and you haven't got many FPSes in the first place, you should go for UT3.
But I suppose it really is just a question whether you need an RPG or an FPS.
:p
It seems like you know enough about either title to make up your own mind. Both titles are more of the same of what their respective developers have being chugging out the last (half a) decade. Go buy whatever you fancy at the moment.
You might as well be asking whether you should buy a scone or a kebab. They are nearly impossible to compare, and which one you prefer might change within the hour.

It depends on whether you want a clone of KOTOR or a castrated version of UT2K4.
Why not just play something else?

Yeah, there are far better games than those two on the market right now. BUT if you're stuck between the two, here was my experience:
I put down Mass Effect after about two hours. I liked the story, it looks great, but the combat was pretty awful.
Unreal Tournament 3 looks absolutely stunning and has enough varied modes to keep you busy for months. But it's more of a "fix" than an actual game, it's not totally fulfilling.
why not get Fallout 3, or Bioshock, or Dead Space, or hell since you were thinkin about UT3, get Call of Duty 4.

CoD4's a great game- probably my favourite CoD after the 2nd one.

I liked the combat in Mass Effect (only two hours? Not long enough for a fair chance). It's a very engaging game, one of my favourites. Played through twice so far, plan on at least one more time, maybe more.

Well I bought UT3 off eBay so I should get it soon.
As for CoD4 and Bioshock, I hate pretty much all WWII FPSes I used to play them in the past but now I'm just getting sick and tired of them they're all the same(no innovation whatsoever). I would get Bioshock but my brother has promised to give me a copy so I didn't want to buy something I can get for free.

CoD4 isn't a WWII shooter. It's pretty overrated anyway. I mean, other than the super fucking subversive story and the single stealth mission it has the worst enemy respawning in the series. Now that I have a PC that can run it at full detail at full FPS I also find the animations to be laughable (I always thought the clunky animation in CoD2/4 was a framerate issue, but no, they apparently actually rendered all their animation at 25 frames per second). It's probably worth playing through once if you get a boner over regenerating health, don't mind the space-invaders style waves of enemies in most areas (oh wait, you can actually kill everyone in space invaders without moving your ship upscreen), and are a fashion hippie.
I'm about 6 or 7 hours into Mass Effect and it's not bad. As with every Bioware game I'm pretty sure I figured out the rest of the story around 3 hours in, and it has the usual collection of early-game fetch quests and retardedly obvious light side/dark side dialogue, but it's still not bad. Oh, and the moon rover shit is gay as hell. If you don't mind playing Baldur's Gate for the 20th time though, go for it.

Stop playing Medal of Honour and start playing Brothers in Arms.
