Thief: The Dark Project/Gold hands down. While Thief 2 is an amazing game Thief 1 has a better, thicker atmosphere, better and more interesting levels and better plot.

I have played the games in order - Thief : The Dark Project, then Thief II : The Metal Age, Thief : Deadly Shadows and, of course, ThiAf 4 or whatever this is called...
I personally found myself to dislike most The Metal Age (original missions) because I didn't like robots and felt they are too much for this steampunk universe. It took me some time to accept them.
As for me, Thief : The Dark Project is and always will be my top favourite. I also enjoyed Deadly Shadows.
As for the new Thief - it's a good game and brought me some good gaming moments, although I still fail to accept the fact the things happen 400-500 years after TDS...

although if thief 2 would have not have that double of the same mission, that might have changed my view or if thief 2 gold would have came out ,that might have been the deal breaker
Casing the Joint and Masks?
I actually liked that, because it broke the formula by making Garrett gather his own map. (BTW: NuGarrett is probably a relative of Toph Beifong, as he senses the new locations) A bit like how Garrett made a "useless" attempt to get the Eye in The Haunted Cathedral, but that led him to the Talismans.

Thief Gold is my favorite, I am actually (re)playing RTTC at this very moment :thumb:
Also like Thief Metal Age, the robots really scared me.
I never played T3 cuz it just didn't feel like Thief. T4 is not looking good either, too many people involved.
The reason I like Thief is cuz you play alone, its just you and your skill, and going into spooky places alone makes it all the more...spooky.
Thank god for fan missions :)

Thief: The Dark Project/Thief Gold gets my vote every time.
Down in the Bonehoard is a particular favourite of mine. I love zombies! I love destroying zombies!
There is nothing quite like loosing a well aimed Holy Water/Fire Arrow into a shambling ghoul's foetid groin, and watch as it disintegrates into a pile of putrid flesh! Groovy.

All of the original trilogy have stand out moments for me. Thief DS had two moments I never experienced in T1/2.
The first was when I was just generally exploring the Hammer HQ in The City between missions. I found a lift and thinking nothing of it I went on it and descended to the lower level. It was only when I got down there that I heard the Haunts patrolling. I immediately got back in the lift and left.
It wasn't until much later when I had to go down there for some objective or other, that I saw an actual Haunt and found out that they had been given a new look.
The second was in the Cradle. When you first enter into the basement and are standing in a corridor, I just didn't want to move and go down the corridor. I wanted to just leave.
The first two games had no moments where I just didn't want to see what was around the corner, I just wanted to back away.
The Haunts are some of the creepiest game enemies of all time, and T1 therefore gets a boost because it has the most of them.
P.S. Shouldn't T1 and TG be listed separately?

Eh.. I thought about doing that and even including "The Dark Mod" on the list. However, I figured essentially, TG and T1 are both the same game minus a couple differences in the GOLD version. Gold is just an extension to TR1 with extra levels and a couple differences within the maps. But what do I know I have only played Thief Gold.

The original two will always be in a deadlock tie for me. I loved both games for what they did in level design, atmosphere, story, creepiness, and so on. I said in another post that whether I prefer TDP/Gold or TMA depends on what mood I'm in, and it's true.
I will say, in T2's defense, that though there were no haunted levels the game still had a creepy atmosphere, in its own way. Seeing the Watcher in the Docks level, and especially seeing the combat bot through a slit in one of those big boxes, really freaked me out. The conversations I heard about the Mechanists intrigued me. I thought the way LGS gradually introduced the Mechanists was very well done, as was Karras.
So I think T2 has every bit the well-done atmosphere as T1. But, again, they're tied for me.
I will also say the lower mines in Cragscleft is my earliest scary game memory - the sense of dread I felt entering those mines, and I was nine when I first played Thief, remains so memorable (and you can only imagine how I felt with Bonehoard and the cathedral levels).
Favorite missions, two from each: Down in the Bonehoard, The Sword, Eavesdropping, and Life of the Party.

Eavesdropping? Nice! I haven't heard that one mentioned before. :D

Those Hammers and Mechanists like to live dangerously. The live in places where Haunts also live with only a locked door or a lift ride between them.
I remember playing Eavesdropping, blackjacking a mechanist then taking him down into the crypt and leaving him just off the patrol route of a Haunt.
It amused me to think of his fright when he woke up.
